Computer Problems

Hi all
hoping one of the IT specialists out there can help me out.

I have recently got a bug in my laptop that allows pop ups to occur when surfing the net. Generally they are for 'Drop Down Deals' but also place hyperlinks in general text directing you to other places rather than the intended link. Also places banners at the bottom of web pages.
Would appreciate any info on how to remedy this issue.
I use Avast antivirus which has been perfect for the last five years up to now.

Thanks
HC

What operating system and browser are you using?

Most modern browsers have in-built "pop-up blocker" logic which can be configured to be more or less zealous, as needed. Most will also give the user a way to add sites to an "allowed" list, because without pop-ups some web apps simply don't work correctly.

However, in this case it sounds like the situation has gone beyond mere pop-ups, with malicious/unwanted code running as a browser add-on. That's how they're managing to place labels at the bottom of every page, and to bombard you with ads for a specific ...er... shop.

Try deactivating browser add-ons whose names don't seem relevant nor well-known. The precise way to disable add-ons would again depend on which browser you're using.

On Windows Xp,7 and 8

You should have trendmicro "hijackthis2.exe" which you can see what programs are starting along with windows on boot time. A very powerful tool to help clean a system, delete unwanted programs from starting up along side windows. Delete any mention of BH0 added toolbars and other likely programs, file missing tags etc

http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/

You can also run the Housecall ant-virus computer check, it will download a small java engine then take over your system for a short while as it checks for virus and rootkits.

All these tools are free to download and use.

Hope this helps

Problem solved:)

Thanks to all for the assistance (even you mams1!).
I used the highjack tool and removed all reference to Yontoo which did the trick. The Yontoo toolbar was downloaded in conjunction with a codec upgrade pack recently installed.
Much appreciated
Peter
