why not 1 m instead of 1.5?

Building a Stella, that and a tip strike post in the snipe thread got me thinking.
Why isn't all the rage in 1 meter DLG?

Easier shipping both in half and built.
So cute.
Cheaper to make and buy.
Less chance of tip strikes.
More fair for guys less than 6' tall.
Easier to transport in car.

What % more?
I wonder what % less shipping?
What % less cost?
What % more contest rounds could be flown with shortened windows or maybe 6x 1.5 instead of 5x2, 4 2.5 min I read of 3 3 mins.

Bigger flys better. 1.5m DLG launch twice as high and can go over 2 minutes in dead air.

On a typical field it's hard to get to the tree line with enough altitude to be effective with a 1M. This severely limits the thermal opportunities on windy days. Likewise getting back becomes more of a challenge.

So your saying the size required for contest fields is reduced? Nice benefit.
Let's say half the cost of 1.5 m ships. Supposedly these 1 m launch 50 m? Maybe Toby here 95 m with a 1.5 m but most are under 65m

I always thought that 1.5m became the standard because it's the longest wing that most people can throw without having to worry too much about tip strikes.

I've seen videos of a 2m DLG being launched, and it looked rather ponderous.

PS- I'm not sure that good 1m wings would cost much less than 1.5m wings. Less in the way of materials, but probably the same amount of work to make, and labor is where the real cost comes in.

F3K rules limit the wing span to 1.5m.

I think in Asia there is a comp that limits span to 950 mm? Might be a Jr deal?

Just need several vendors to advertise a big contest a year out and put up some big prize money to kickstart F3K mini popularity?

In China, the national Juniors compete 950mm, weird but whatever.

Performance will definitely be decreased compared to a 1.5m. That said, I would like to see more 1.3 and 1.4m planes... cool to see the FW6 a little shorter than the norm!

1m planes ballasted correctly can be really really high... I'd say higher than I can with a 1.5m.

The fun factor with 1m planes is huge, even if you're not launching it higher than your 1.5m it still looks like it since they get small in a hurry

We do the "Official" 1m world champs (aka the Half Pint) every year in February at San Felasco http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...83&postcount=1 Sorry, no prize $$ but we do give out some nice half pint glasses.

So far Gavin is the 3 time reigning champ, but I don't expect him to make it 4

the truth is: Good 1m plane cost near same money as a 1.5m plane in factory and if can't sell in a good price. no one will make DLG anymore.

Always some mongrel cut down 1.5m, but the Sparrow Hawks are gaining on him.
