Streetcar Ground Breaking....

Streetcar groundbreaking ceremony for "first" leg of project was yesterday, here in Charlotte. Transportation Secretary was here, and said,"best Christmas present you could "GIVE" the citizens of Charlotte". What a crock. The word give, used in conjunction with taxpayer funded projects, is laughable on its face. When most projects such as these, already lose their butts, go over budget, and such, not to mention the property tax hikes needed to fund these overruns, its just crazy to even start crap like this in this economy. The continued need for our Democrat majority politicians here to keep doing stuff like this, and continue to want more tax dollars to pay for it absolutely amazes me. Blows me away that all have to pay for something few will use....

I guess this fits into Obama's high speed rail projects !!
Almost 50 million per mile.........what a bargain ! Plus they will be running buses at the same time. What a waste. Someone in the city is making out on this project.
At least it goes by a hospital for when Obama care kicks in high gear.

They are a complete waste of money for many cities. Cincinnati will begin their project soon. It will be a money pit for millions of dollars each year.

Mayor Fox,(our own personal baby Obama), has been seriously pushing this streetcar project. After a huge and seriously flawed property tax hike last year, he wants to raise taxes again to pay for the extensions. Streetcars are NOT needed, we already have bus routes covering the proposed streetcar routes....

Let's see:

First we had streetcars.

Then we had cars.

Then GM bought up all the streetcar lines and put them out of business.

Then we had GM buses.

Then GM went close to bankrupt.

Then the Feds bailed out GM.

Now the local governments are investing in streetcars again.

Yep....that makes PERFECT sense to me.

What are he odds GM will try to do it again in the future ?.

What they need is hybrid bus/streetcars....a bus powered by an electric motor getting it's electricity off an overhead pantograph, and either a camera and a computer keeping it following the pantograph wire, or really accurate GPS. You'd get the advantages of a non-polluting electric bus, and and you wouldn't have to tear up the roads to lay tracks.

They already have them, just takes the right kickbacks, payoffs, cronyism to implement.

I've never understood the appeal. Streetcars cannot do anything a bus can't, so whats the advantange over a bus, especially a hybrid bus. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/22/au...2BUS.html?_r=0
