To a believer (or at least a Christian one) thoughts of God represent blessed assurance of eternal love, mercy and grace. To an atheist the prospect that there may in fact be a God, and in particular a God of the Bible would mean they were in deep poo, poo.... Unless of they turn to God of course.

The non-existence of God stresses me just as much as no Santa Claus, and the absence of an Easter Bunny,
none.

The same with all the gods, Odin, Thor, etc.

It seems you read quite a bit into that study - since the entire paragraph I bolded is little more than YOUR beliefs - the study came to no such conclusions.

I'm glad you find such comfort in your beliefs - but at least be honest about it. Which you were not in the paragraph above.

I'd say Ira's opinion and the study came to the same 'conclusion' that in the end, it causes distress.

I saw a study once that showed 15 year olds who still believed in santa claus existed where happier and calmer than those who didn't.

The ultimate goal of my existence is not to achieve calm. Quite the contrary, the challenge of meeting life as it presents itself, and the stress of confronting your mortality is a positive and good thing. It sure makes you pay attention to what matters--things of this world, rather than imaginary things in an imaginary future.

It's beyond easy for anyone to jump on the Internet and find "an article" that proves or disproves a personal belief system.

The really comical part is when they hold it up to "prove" something - like they discovered a valuable find and they're hoping for confirmation replies, groping for much needed support.

Lets see, a person who believes in god is content; OK. I've always been told there is no man without sin. It would seem to me that christians would be stressing out and anxious about sinning while heaven slips away. If I were a christian, I'd be a mess.

Simply put:
