Build Log
Byzantium by 1: 20 Scale custom model based on the Pride of Baltimore

Hello this is my first post on this forum. I have a build log for the Byzantium on MSW and am starting a duplicate log here. The Byzantium is a radio controled 1: 20 Scale topsail schooner of my design loosely based on the Pride of Baltimore. I made made the hull using the plank on bulkhead method then coated it in fiberglass the bulkheads were then removed and recut into beams for the deck. I made the mast from some pine dowels I got from my local hardware store the topmast are made from same but tapered with a micro plane.

Looks nice, thanks for the photos. Any history you can give us on the ship's name?

I am a big Doctor Who fan and in the episode The Time of Angels there was a space ship named Byzantium I liked the name so I decided to name my model the Byzantium also there was an ancient city named Byzantium before it was changed to Constantinople.

I just realized that I interpreted the negative space in the line drawings as positive space and made the wales wrong. should I fix them or just leave them?

I made the top gallant yard. Now I need to decide which way to attach them to the model I have drawn to different style devices for attaching the yards, wood jaws and an iron hinge thing. The wood jaws would be easier but not as good but on the other hand I don't have the metalworking knowledge tools or materials to make the iron hinge thing.

The hinge thing wouldn't have appeared on a Baltimore Clipper circa 1800-1830. The yoke and parrel were used. The t'gallant yard didn't stay up there, the sail was hauled up from deck as was the main tops'l, and brought down to deck when struck.

Here's some pictures of the actual Pride of Baltimore that may help a little.
