Question
Are the Beaver strus mandatory

Are the wing struts on the Hangar 9 30CC Gas Beaver really necessary?

I have broken 3 of them in less than a month. The keeper on the low end falls out and the strut hangs down so it gets broken when you land.

There is a stout wing tube and 1/4 20 bolts holding the wing. I have flown around with the strut hanging down, knowing it would be destroyed on landing without noticing and wing flexing.

Has anyone flown without these struts? At the price I can't keep replacing them every week.

I cant say about the hangar9 but I have a 109" aeronca and you can tell the wing sags a little when you remove the strut.
I wouldn't fly without them.

Good rule of thumb is if the real plane had them then put them on especially on wings over 30".

The manual does not say if the struts are necessary or not. They assume we will use them. The manual DOES SAY that the strut is EASILY BROKEN. But they don't have a fix!!!

I ask because the 3D Hobby Shop 84" Big Foot has a problem with the struts coming apart. The manual says they are functional,
However: The forum on that plane is full of people who fly WITHOUT the struts. A plane at our field does full on 3D without the struts. So I wondered if the Beaver had the same capability>>Not 3D Though LOL.

Replace the struts with removable flying wires. However if the struts are coming loose figure out a way to secure them ie a small piece of fuel tube to keep a clevis closed

The spring clip that goes through the pin gets loose and falls out. We can order "spares" from Horizon at $10 + for a couple of them. They lose their "spring" after a couple of uses then just fall out.
When that happens the strut hangs straight down and it is impossible to land without breaking it at the wing end. I have broken 3 of them in a couple of weeks. The replacements are about $26+. Real PITA. I would expect better from H9.

I tried using a 4x40 bolt and a nilock nut to replace the pin/body clip as supplied, but it is nearly impossible to get it together without dropping the nut inside the gear fairing. PITA again.

If you place a bit of fuel line on the clevis pin it will put tension on the cotter pin.

Small cotter pins can be had in bulk from anywhere that sells RC car stuff, they hold the bodies to the cars.

Thank you for the tips. The problem may go away, and hopefully car body pins are cheaper than H9 wants for them.
I have the same problem with the pins on the Pawnee also, but the strut does not hang down and get broken.

I tried the fuel line to provide tension today.
WELL, the pin popped out during the first taxi to the runway. Needless to say that cost me Yet ANOTHER of those PITA H9 struts!
This is the worst design yet out of China!

Can we get some pics of your plane with the struts and pins installed? There's no reason for the body pins to just pop out, as there's no tension on them

THE SPRING CLIPS that are supposed to keep the pin in place fall off allowing the pin to fall out with vibration.
The "spring" is No Good. After a couple uses they open up and do NOT grip the pin. They are made of CHEAP SOFT material.

The problem is NOT the Pin, it is the Spring cotter key that holds the pin in.

I have ordered a couple extra seta of these, since they are easy to drop and lose, They get $10 for 4 of the things and none of them hold their shape after a few uses. They ARE NOT spring steel like they should be.
