“The time it takes for the battery voltage to drop by 0.1V is longer at lower voltages versus at higher voltages. That means that if a constant current was drawn from the battery, it would take the battery a lot longer to discharge from 1.2V to 1.1V than it would from 1.5V to 1.4V. This means that the extent to which the battery life is increased could be even higher.”
Misleading

While true for the example given, below 1.1v there is pretty much no capacity left. So the 8x increase is rubbish (unless the device is so crap it falls over at 1.4V/cell in which case the designer should be fired).

desertstalker,

may be misleading, but I liked the concept of an electronic regulator coupled directly to the battery, providing regulated voltage for devices without this built in capability.

There is the possibility of arguing about the total amount of energy that is capable to extract from a given cell type: 2x ? 4x ?, 8x, ? it has to be seen.
Even looks interesting to me at 3x.

I wonder how the device will manage not to draw a quiescent current when the no power is needed, and yet be ready to use every time. Also, Alkalines tend to leak more the deeper they are discharged.

I remember a DIY device called the Joule Thief that did essentially what it sounds like this does. It was only good for very low powered devices like low intensity LED lights though.
