I've recently used Tamiya flat clear in a spray can and it works really well. It's lacquer based, so definitely test first over the paint you are using to make sure it doesn't ruin the finish. I had no problems used over enamel and also Warbird Colors acrylic paint. The cans are small, so you may need more than one. I just put on a very light coat on top of an FMS Stuka, and it didn't really need very much at all. Testors Dulcote in a spray can might work for you, too.

I used the Krylon flat clear on monokote and it blushed horribly, leaving an ugly greyish splotchy finish. Any ideas on how to avoid this? Don't tell me about humidity. I live in Florida!

Did it do this immediately or over time? And what "version" are you using?

It blushed immediately even though I tried to go with light coats. Version? I only know of one version, FLAT CLEAR.

See I think this is where the problems lie ... there are so many versions of Krylon clear that when someone says "theirs" does or doesn't work the confusion still lingers. I've heard as much people say "it" works for them as those that have said "it" doesn't work. Attached are just four of the versions that I have discovered. You will notice that they all have one thing in common ... they are all basically "flat/matte" clear.

So which do you have?

I think he was referring to the fact that Krylon has changed the formula thus -another version. I use the flat a lot and have never had any problems with it regardless of version. You do need to shake it up really good to make sure the flatteners are mixed good and keep shaking between sprays.

Harry,
I have the first one, on the left that has two cans in the picture...the one marked "FLAT". I have never seen the other two available around here. Which have you used with success?

I just looked and have both. The one on the left is the newer version and I just used it on a new plane to dull it down and it went on even with a great finish. I was surprised it didn't react to some enamel I used. I sometimes use a heat gun on a lower setting to dry between coats.

Did you apply it over a monocote/ultracote type covering? That's where I ran into trouble.

Yes, Ultracote, glossy plastic, parts painted with enamel, parts painted with latex....and it looks good on everything I have put it on raw Ultracote and Ultracote that I scuffed up with 0000 steal wool. Didn't seem to make any difference. Hope this helps.

I've painted over covering with Krylon rattle cans and had pretty good luck so far. I mask off an area to paint then I use a scotchbrite pad to scuff the area to be painted. I follow up with a wipe with mineral spirits to degrease and remove any sanding dust.

For a flat clear coat I recently bought a can of testors dullcote to test on covering. It's lacquer based so I don't know what it will do to the covering or if it will be fuel proof.

I guess I'll just have to try again. I think my problem here was the humidity.
