Mc Donnel Douglas MD83 - Scratch build from depron

My passion is for airliners, and I have a few already and if you want an rc airliner you have to build it yourself, so here goes! I have had the plans for a while, and while waiting for Windriders Boeing 737 this will be my "waste of time" in the weeks to come!

Plans are from www.scale-parkflyer.de and the specs are as follows:
  • Wingspan: 1300 mm (51")
  • Fuse length: 1670 mm (65")
  • Target RTF weight: 1100 grams (39oz)
  • Wingloading 45 g/dm˛

Video:
http://www.rcmovie.de/video/3d5b9bad...-Airliner-MD83

Lets begin! If you think that cutting a lot of depron parts is a pain in the a this is not a build for you, because there is a lot of pieces to cut, in my opinion maybe too many. But the plans are very well made, and a lot of though has obviously been put into it. There is also a 72 page build manual (unfortunately only in german - I'm getting very fond of google translator)

Fuselage is first, and uses conventional stringers and formers method, nothing difficult, just time consuming...

I realised that this is not a small parkflyer, the fuse is long!

I let the pictures speak for itself

Next step is to glue the formers, and add the side stringers, the the fuse is going to be covered with 3mm depron.

So that's the start, more to come!

Looks great! It's wonderful to see all these models start appearing! Just awsome!
I really like the 83 because of it's high tail and bus like appearance in the sky demands attention from the ground.

Need DC-10 Kit and 727 to make a nice rounded airline.

There are already lots of 747, A380 kits.

fabio used these exact engines on his 727 and one quit on him, be careful there are reports that these EDF units are not quite up to par.

The build continues! Now the fuse is getting closer to look like a fuse. The stringers are now in place, and I have now run out of pieces...

More cutting to do!

Thanks!
Only if the Windrinder 737-700 turns up on my doorstep in the middle of the build. Really hope so but it won't happen

Ben_e that looks very cool !

Do you think there is a chance to put two 64mm fans -from my crashed exec. jet - into this one?

Sorry Markus, I don´t think so. I´m afraid they are too heavy...

Great!

You inspired me so much that I ordered the plans too

450 grams of thrust from the fans you are planning to use, is probably on 4 cells....

Will find out for myself, as I ordered them too XD

Thinking of retracts as well.

The build continues!
First the stringers on the side was glued to the formers. To secure that the fuse ends up straight, I taped a wooden stick to them before I glued it to the formers.

I have been thinking of how to form the depron to the fuse I used a hairdryer and a glass mug with approx the same diameter. Slightly and gently heating the depron - and it stays in shape long enough to be glued to the fuse.

Here are some pictures of the progress!

Have been working on the retracts. I have to prepeare the nose wheel, and the retracts mounting at this stage. The retracts are micro retracts from HK, and it's a jewel

The weight of the nose gear retracts including mounting plate is a mere 22grams.

Some more progress!

In order to get a good and firm nose gear mount I have doubled opp the spars with 6 mm depron. In addition I have used some carbon to stiffen it up and to distribute the load when landing. The weight penalty was not that bad either, I'm now at 154 grams (5,4oz) That includes also the 3mm depron sheeting on the top of the fuselage.
