Decade old rebuild- R/N Mercury
Over a decade ago- I built this airplane as one of my first electrics (well half dozen or so..) used a Speed 280, Graupner 5x2 prop and 7-8 cell 280 mAH NiMHs. Weight was around 7.5-8 oz. The airplane even survived getting stuck in a tree (rescued by some nice firemen who were bored.) but over time, the fuse got pretty grunchy and the covering was just a mess. So I saved the tailfeathers and the wing- stripped them, and had them lying around to look at and bug me. Finally I decided to resurrect the airplane- about a decade later!
Rebuilding the fuse was easy- I bought another kit for the plans. (Anybody need a kit? I'll sell it for less than Penn Valley- there are just a few pinholes in the plan.) These days I'm running some Hobby Royalty 20 gram? motor on a GWS 6 x 5 and a 2s 500 pack. Weight is still around 7.8 oz. Duration and power are better- glide would be better with a smaller prop. Why no dramatic changes in weight? Well, I wanted a pack on the cg so I could swap between 2s and 3s in case I wanted to try towing with the airplane. (I'm thinking Thermic 50s- I have a bunch of carcasses lying around.) While the motor is certainly lighter- I needed to add a bunch of pennies in the nose to get the cg in range. Sometimes lighter equipment really doesn't do too much...
I suspect the covering is also a smidge heavier- it's doculam vs. Reynold's crystal wrap- but boy is it a lot tougher and much more serviceable! Overall, the airplane flies pretty much like I remember- it's a very forgiving and relatively slow ship.
