Dutch sub K-XVIII

Hi all,

I'm new here. Ive scratchbuilt my first sub in the last three years and got it to sail this year.

The K-XVIII was built in 1934 in the Netherlands and made a long sea voyage to the Dutch East indies. It fought the Japanese in WWII and was destroyed by its own crew when the base was overrun in 1942. Lots of photo, film and books are available as the K-XVIII was famous for a long voyage aimed at doing gravity measurements for the Dutch Geology Society.

The model is 1:50, 1.44 meter long and 8 kg weight
The hull is wood, made using the bread-and-butter method
The boat has a divetank emptied and filled with a two way gear pump
The boat opens along the full length, and is seled with a seal along the full hull.

Attached video shows the boat in a swimming pool in Lichtenstein, together with an Austrian U-boat (yes they had them too)

Very beautiful build!
It looks very much like the later versions of the USS Holland, which I have blueprint drawings.

Giovanni

Hi all,

The K-XVIII had a pair of "decktubes", torpedo tubes that could be trained starboard or port and are located under the deck forward of the gun.
I decided to try to make these functional, and started experimenting with rubber motor driven torpedos. Not a new subject I think but I spent some time optimizing 1:50 scale torpedos. Result is OK so far and i have now started on the torpedo release mechanism, a trainable mount that can ejectthe torp into the water and start the motor.

Very promising results with the flight rubber! I've tampered with rubber-band powered torpedoes in the past but have never gotten them to work beyond a range of a few centimeters or so... Do you have good source for obtaining flight rubber?

I ordered the flight rubber, lucricant and a winder from below adress.
The rubber made a lot of difference as did optimising the propellor pitch as the rpm's are surprisingly high (>10000). Im still waiting for some special props from propshop to see if I can improve further.

The real trick will be to minimize counterrotation, as that might increase range further.
