Help!
Help me pick a new travel plane!

I do a lot of traveling, and have decided to upgrade from my anemic UMX P-40. I primarily fly Southwest, which has a carry-on size limit of 10"x16"x24". I don't trust the baggage handlers. I have been looking at the UMX Sport Cub S and the UMX Icon, simply for their versatility, but do you guys have any other suggestions?

The SCS ain't gonna do it. Bare plane is 16" long from rudder to prop without the rubber spinner and 24 1/2" wing span. Naked it won't fit.

And the UM Icon's box is bigger than the Sport Cub's.

Your best bet is probably the UMX Pitts, which has a very small box.

Here's one that will do it. Kinda like a brushless SCS only just enough smaller, and the wing is easy to remove.

Here's a thread on it with some vids and commentary: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2400270

Edit: you'd probably have to modify the box to work. You'll see in the unboxing vid.

I too think the sport cub s has a big box i would try staying with a plane around 16 inch wing.
The P51 16.2 inch, F4u micro 15.9 inch, Beast 3 d 14.7,pt 17 15.3. Same size box as your p40.

I gave him the measurements on a Sport Cub S box in another thread he started on this subject. I don't have them off the top of my head but it's too big 2 dimensions out of 3. I just told him a couple posts back that the Sport Cub S buck nekkid is bigger than Southwest allows.

So probably yes, what you're recommending is his best choice. But I don't think he's speaking to us.

My travel planes are the UMX pitts and UMX Habu. They get flown everywhere and can handle quite a bit of wind too. Habu and pitts both have small wings and boxes.

How about buying some 1/4 inch plywood and building a box for the foam insert in the box you have, then put the foam insert in the new plywood box, add your plane and support equipment and check it as luggage, the plywood ought to protect it.? Just a thought.

The umx pt-17 has a tiny box as well, good for smaller places but less wind tolerance then the other suggestions
