It never hurts to ask...

On the way home today, I stopped at the downtown hobby shop to pick up one of those Midwest 6" rulers that have cutouts to measure your wood thickness along the edge. Looking at some of the old stuff hanging on the wall, I figured, "What the heck, they might have some old accessories I need". So I asked the woman behind the counter if they had any old Cox stuff left. She didn't know what I meant, so she called over to the owner and asked if they had any Cox stuff. "Not much," he said. "What are you looking for?" I told him I was looking for a tank mount for an .049 TeeDee or Medallion. He looked confused, but went in the back. He came out and said, "Is this what you're talking about?"

"Uh, not exactly. I'm looking for a gas tank that the TeeDee or Medallion bolts onto." "Oh, an engine mount he says." I said yeah, one with a built in tank, but I think he still didn't understand.

So he asks if this is something I'd be interested in. "I don't know. How much?" He says to make an offer, so I offered $40. "Well, I can sell it to you for $50." Needless to say, it came home with me. $40 would have been great, but I think $50 is good.

Good snag, but you need to take some lessons from ol' Les on Hardcore Pawn...... I would have offered $20 since he didn't have what I was looking for.

I thought about offering him $20, but I would have felt guilty .

Actually, I'm going to go back tomorrow morning to ask what other Cox stuff he has in back.

It pays to ask, pt. II

Well, I went to the downtown hobby shop to see if they had anything else, but they didn't. So, I went to the hobby shop on the other side of town to get some building supplies, since they charge less for glues and such. As I was leaving, I decided to see if they had an .049 glow plug wrench. When I asked about Cox accessories, I got the same, "Uh, we really don't carry Cox stuff anymore". So the guy took me to the back corner of the store and showed me the three, count them, three pegs of Cox stuff at the bottom corner of the wall. They had three glow plug clips, two .09 glow plugs, and about 20 old needle valves for Babe Bees. The only other thing they had was something I could use, a PeeWee .020 overhaul kit. I was gonna order one this week anyway, so I grabbed it. Sticker price? $1.00. The savings on the rebuild kit paid for my gas to drive across town.

True Story:

I once went to a hole in the wall hobby shop in Boise in 2007, they had a Cox RR-1 in decent shape, for $30. I tried to give it to a guy on RCU as a present, he sent it back after not being able to get it to run (the drum was not assembled correctly), it ended up going to Greece IIRC and I got $400 for it.

I love hobby shops like that. There is a train / small hobby shop near me and I found a stack of M.A.N. and Flying Models mags from the 50's and 60's and 1 or 2 RCM mags from the late 70's all for a buck a piece! about 20 in total so I grabbed them up. A lot of neat aero modeling history in them. The mags were in good shape but brittle from being stored in a dry location. A few have already fallen apart on me. One of my favorite things about them are the prices in the advertisements. I.E. 50 cents for a .10 size rc kit, $12.00 for a .60 size engine etc...
