Kangke Howard DGA ARF Bash

Kangke Howard ARF Bash! Old habits die hard. It comes as natural to bash my projects into a form that makes them uniquely mine. So I could not contain myself with this ARF (I think I have a build addiction). My sobriety from building kits was short lived and I fell off the wagon within 2 days of receiving my new Howard.
In a weekend binge I removed all the covering. Once I went that far, well, you can just imagine all the changes a builder can come up with. Absolutely disgusting. I think I need in-patient treatment.

It should be noted that while the Kangke Howard is advertised as a 1/4 scale, it is in fact very, very, close to 1/5 scale. A ¼ scale would require a 114” wingspan. While the overall length might imply 1/4 scale, it is only longer because Kangke extended the distance from the C/G to the empennage plus a couple inches from the CG to the firewall. These are common sport scale modifications to give a model airplane better pitch stability. Other than that lengthening of the fuselage, I found the profile of the fuselage, tail-feathers, cowl, gear, and cord of the wing very close to 1/5 scale. Finally, the Kangke Howard is modeled after a DGA-15 (N67433), not a DGA-12.
In any case, this is a HUGE 1/5 scale. The Howard was a big single, so at 1/5th, its looks 1/4 scale.

Still, all-in-all, the main framework has good scale profiles. However, the ARF is missing many details that give the Howard its distinguishing appearance. In addition, it also fails at representing existing details that could have easily been made correctly in the first place, like the struts or wheel pants. I believe that with some corrections and additional modifications it can really shine and be more than just another cookie-cutter ARF out at the field. I am calling it an ARB: All- Ready-to-Bash!

This picture illustrates some of the changes I am going to make. Disclaimer: I wanted my ARF to “look more like” the full scale Howard. I was not trying to get the model to “scale”, nor am I at all concerned if these mods fall short of another person’s opinion of scale. Neither are my building techniques the last word on how to do something. If I use the term “scale” in this thread, it usage is as a synonym or metaphor. So if anyone wants to shout “Hey, that’s not very scale!” it’s not really going to concern me much. These are the changes that I want to make. I am hoping they will be informative, helpful, or give ideas to others who will do a better job than I did.
