Sunset Models F15 Eagle Build Thread

Wanted to start build thread on the Sunset Models F15

One of the reasons I like this model is because of Buzz has worked hard to keep it simple, it's ability to scale as I go along and the price ...it's 429.00 usd for the short kit and 650.00 usd for the full kit before shipping.

It's a nice sized model but it's wing load CAN be kept fairly low, Buzz has some different powering options from 1x120mm to 2x120mm and even 2x 90mm fans if you got a couple laying around begging to be placed in a model.

I'm going to maiden with the CS 120mm 4 blade fan and SUPPO motor with Turnigy\HobbyWing esc.

After maiden, land it nice after 3 good flights and get to scaling, drop tanks, paint, lights etc...just my tradition...Don't like to scale a jet I'm scared of flying.

Specs:
- 86L x
- 57ws
- 14 16lbs AUW

Parts list so far

Gear
- Nose and mains
(link)

- Wheels (nose (link))
- PZ 1509 etracts with metal trunnions (link)
Servos
- HK High torque, High volt servos (link) for tailerons
- Corona (link) for rudder
Power system
- CS 120 mm 12 blade (link)
- Motor (link)
- ESC (link)
RX
- RX With RSSI (link)
- Dual BEC (link)
-

For twin 90mm 8s
- CS 12blad 90mm (link)
- Turnigy 3126 (link)
- ESC (link)

Going to do a single CS 120 fan and then paint and scale it out with AB lights and drop tanks etc. Then fly it with twin CS 90mm 12 blades fans Buzz from Sunset Models is making ducting for.

I will split the build log into aircraft sections NOSE, FUSE, WINGS starting with the nose..

NOSE:

Nice choice. Good luck with the build and maiden.

One question, what retracts are those?

Cheers,
Eric B.

PZ 514s but with metal trunions.

I've gone way over the weight with the smaller ones with the plastic trunnions in the past.

Thanks for the info.
Who offers the metal trunions?

You are not worried about those retracts at 16lb AUW? Is your field paved?

Club field is fairly bumpy I'm more concerned about the mount than the pz etract, gonna do a strut back stop to help with giving the strut mount some help.

Impressed with the PZ etracts after they fixed their transistor issues. Been using the 2.5kg on near 10lbs DC 10 for 2yrs and many flap less landings with little issues to speak of.

More pics,

Got the Fuse this weekend and starting on getting the formers in.

I was expecting to get the fan this weekend but snail mail has it bottled up somewhere in God knows where.

Prolly will have it this week so I'll be able to balance it and get the exhaust ducting fitted to it.

More progress

Balanced another fan for maiden. The CS 120 4 blade fan needs a long 6mm shaft and I have to install it later but for now the haoye 127mm with "special" motor will do.

Some mods for variety...

I thought over the weekend I would love to test the theory of having intakes feeding air into an installed fan vs an open air intake with intake lip installed like a good amount of Byron fans do.

I thought the motor mount mod would be simple and easy and it was, so this mount would allow for open air intake with shroud lip AND intake with some Fliteskin or I'll just carve some foam and make my own intake tube.

Coming along...

Seems like the in air time for this model is very short, I've spend a total of 5hrs so far...

I think the wings might be the hard part, we'll see

Spent all day Sunday assembling and balancing fans

....here are some numbers

Haoye with 670kv 5045 big foot motor from Hobby partz
104 amps
13lbs thrust
35volts

T600 880kv motor and ETurbax rotor
16lbs 10oz
140 amps
41 volts

CS 12blade 120
14.5lbs thrust
95 amps
44 volts

I'm going to use the FighterCat RC 16s esc with the CS 12 blade 120mm if the mods to the 120 work out and the rotor assembly can take a beating...

I'll be putting the esc in front of the fan about an inch or two so I'll be able to put the batteries in multiple locations for balancing...

Thing screams for twin 90s
