Trying to build an osprey
Hello. My friends and I thought it would be a fun project to try to build an arduino powered osprey over the summer. We don't have a lot of experience with this kind of stuff, but are willing to give it a shot, given that it is not way over our heads. There are a couple of issues we want to get sorted out before we get too far into it.
First of all, we are trying to build it out of insulation and make it reasonably big at a 2.5 foot wingspan and a little over 3 feet long. We are going to try to keep it light by hollowing out the inside, but it is possible that it might end up being a couple of pounds (maybe like 4). This is our first concern. Is that going to be way to heavy? Should we scale it down? What kind of motors/propellers should we get that could give us enough lift? Right now we are thinking of maybe about a 14" diameter propellers, but would you guys have a suggestions along with motors that would both fit them (in terms of things like shaft diameter) and give us enough lift?
At this point this is our primary concern. We are also debating whether to go with flaps or the less authentic but easier tail rotor for pitch control and stabilization, but first we just want to make sure we can get it to lift at all.
Are we being too ambitious for our first project? Any suggestions you can give us or problems we might run into?

First project? Have you bult a regular quad copter or tri-copter yet? Bi-copters are significantly more challenging. Building something scale is also it's own set of challenges. If you haven't built a simple quad, do that first.
Then, You might want to start with just a sheet foam wing and profile fuselage, possibly some balsa or hardwood, or even carbon fiber bracing to make it stiff enough. Go for simple and ugly. When you have some success you can make it pretty later. Keep it under 3 pounds and your life will be easier.

Dualsky XM3536CA-8 1050 rpm/v or equiv. Direct drive.
Master Airscrew 16x10x3 (both pusher and puller)
10 Amps will give you 36 oz. lift per motor at approx. 2300 rpm
