Thornton F3F Race - 6/12/11

We decided to have our monthly F3F Race at Thornton instead of the SLOT.

Mart was the CD with help by Ken Gregory.

Good conditions, 16 mph and straight in all day. Gradually built all as the day went on. 22 mph by the time we left around 4:30pm.

Adam Gardner came out for his first time racing F3F and flew his Vortex. He flew very well and looked very smooth. The Vortex is FAST!

Mart has left today for the XC Soaring Camp for the week in Montaque, CA - Soaring Safari and will be back next week I would imagine with scores.

I took some iPhone videos, raw footage:
(did not shoot everyone due to working base A)

Adam's very first F3F run:
IMG 1098 (1 min 25 sec)

Adam's second run:
IMG 1103 (1 min 18 sec)

Adam's third run:

Mart's first run with new FS3-RDS:

Ken's first run of the day:

Steve's run ending with stuck flap:

Thanks for posting. Adam was pumped over this event. Bummer about Steve's problem. I haven't seen Steve in about 15 years. Does he still look like Matthew Broderick in the Ferris Bueller movie?

Yes, with just a slight hint of gray now.

Dave,

thanks for taking the vidoes. The weather was coorperative and the lift was good. It was fun to hang out with all the veteran pilots (Dave, Mart, Steve, Greg, Ken, and Jack) and to be able to watch, listen and learn. Thanks for all the tips.

Looking forward to my next race... with a bigger and faster plane.

Although, isn't 70 second run with 1.5m/60" plane the same as a 35 second run with a 3m/120" plane?

That was a lot of fun! I had a GREAT time! Thornton Beach is such a GREAT venue for F3F!!!!!

I think the conversion factor would make it a 32 second run!

Me too. I actually had this last weekend free and would have loved to get some laps in at Thornton.

Dave,

It was a 37.24 a few years back. That is one of the best slopes around, we are lucky to have that site and I hope they get some more racing going down there.

Forgive me if you know all this but for anyone else who does not know, many of us communicate on a Yahoo Groups regarding F3F Racing at NorCal F3F:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NorCal...guid=408450532

You can add yourself to the "members" list and then get emails of any recent posts like Mart's recent post for flying at Thornton. You would be in the communication loop. This is how we all knew we were going to fly at Thornton.

I know there are 143 members in the NorCal F3F Yahoo Group, it won't let me see if you already are a member.

Also the guys down south are very active in F3F. They also have a Yahoo Group as well for F3F at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SoCalS...guid=408450532

They also have a very good web site:
http://www.socalsloperacing.com/

I like going to SCSR to see what they are doing. As a result of looking I am going down in August to fly.

Also NCSS - NorCal Slope Soarers has a Yahoo Group for it's members where they communicate. I believe F3F posts from NCSS also get posted on NorCal F3F Yahoo Group as well. So you don't have to be a member of NCSS to race once a month or to know what is going on.

Hope this is what you were asking. Forgive me for any redundant info. you already knew.
