New Product
JW 48 **available now**

***UPDATE: Kits are available and the website is updated!***

http://www.jwglider.com
Kits are now available on the website and orders are shipping. There has been a lot of interest in 48" JW's so this kit should be a nice addition to many hangars.

JW 48 UL
1.9lb EPP wing and fuselage
Hollow carbon top spar
Pre-bent aluminum joiner
Coroplast tail template
Depron tail section
Balsa elevons
2-56 pushrods and links
Nylon control horns

Battery: 750mah Eneloop AAA 4-Cell or 5-Cell pack
Receiver: AR-400 or other small 4 channel RX
Servos: Hitec HS-65MG Mighty Feather

These should come in around 16 ounces AUW with a wing loading of around 6oz / sf. It is possible to add a lower spar and build one heavy but the charm of the kit is keep the weight down so it can be used in lighter wind.

Aaron

Here is a video of some light wind testing of the JW48 UL at Kanan. Wind was very light and eventually dropped out but the light plane was still a lot of fun to fly.

Perfect timing just got home and my JW 48 has arrived and yes I am now building 3 JW'S at one time. I'm just wondering how many you can build at one time and actually take as long as building one JW. Flying that JW 48 literally is like cheating unbelievable control backside and front if I would have started with a JW I would most certainly be much farther along in my DS Venture. What a plane what a great teacher Aaron is. Thanks again Aaron my next goal is to go full on FURBALL with you.Happy Flying All.Wayne

I have been teaching DS to Wayne and Dan with my light 48" JW and I have also been practicing DS low-altitude acro. The poor plane has been piled in close to 75 times now. The only "damage" it has suffered is a few creases in the depron tail and some poke holes from sticks that I simply tape over to repair.

I used colored packing tape for the hinge and the hinge has yet to fail. I like the light weight and low resistance of this type of tape for the hinge. It puts less strain on the servos so the battery lasts longer.

As for battery, I went with 4-cell AAA Eneloop pack but had to add a little nose lead to balance out. I am thinking of changing out to a 5-cell AAA Eneloop pack for more servo speed and so that the heavier battery will eliminate the need for nose lead. Functional weight > dead weight.

On my leading edge, I put a full length strip of clear packing tape (cut down to 3/4" wide) on the outside of the colored packing tape finish. This tape holds down the edges of the colored tape so it doesn't form dog-ears on landing. It has held up perfectly and keeps drag down at the leading edge over time.

I once had the whole upper sheet of Ultracote blow off a JW at the bottom turn. The covering had been separating at the LE just from wear and tear, and somehow the pressure worked under it and blew the whole thing off. It was hanging on at the TE, flapping in the wind like a flag, and I barely got it back up to the top of the hill again. Now I slap a layer of clear tape over any LE just to be sure.

Some of you have been having trouble getting your radio programmed to work well with planks. Here are some pointers that should make a big difference:

1. Use "Delta Wing" airplane type
2. Set end point adjustments to 100%
3. Set aileron full rate to 100%, dual rate to something like 80%
4. Set elevator full rate to 55%, dual rate to 50%
5. Do not use "expo"
6. Do not use "differential"
7. Make sure your geometry is such that the servo arms are parallel to each other at rest and square to the top skin of the plane.

After you get your first plank programmed correctly, just copy it for your next one and so on.

I must say, I was never much of fan of the original JW at our little local hill, but the light weight 48" works awesome!
