What radios are good for racing quads?

Just finished building my first quadcopter and the only thing left to buy is my radio system. Of course I'm looking at the Taranis. It seems to be the most popular choice. But I like to have options to choose from. So my question is: what other radios out there are comparable to the Taranis and would be good to use for my racing quad?

Since these Racing quads are typically very simple a 4 channel radio would work as all you really need. Just Arm, throttle up and go.

So really any radio from the $20 FlySky to the $800 Futaba.

I have been using the $20 6ch FlySky and it works well. Recently got the Taranis Plus and for FPV Proximiy/racing the best feature is Battery Voltage telemetry with Audio announcements for low and critical battery Voltage. This is great to alert me to head back and land.

Just my 2 cents.

I got a taranis, but finding it's a lot more radio than I need. I'm looking to going back to a dx6 or dx7.

Thanks for the input guys. How about the Turnigy 9x or 9xr? They seem to be pretty good, and they are inexpensive.

I had the 9xr and liked it...I ran an orange module in it and it did really well for close proximity flying.

Plus I wasn't worried being rough on the transmitter.

I have a vanilla 9X. It works well and is compatible with the smaller Turnigy 6 channel receivers - saves weigh for the racers. I don't have much range distance info, yet, but it's held up well. It is huge, though. If you get one, also spring for the 1.5 mAh LiFe battery to save form having to spend on AA batteries. It's cheap and lasts for freaking ever.

Just make sure the receivers support PPM or serial so you don't need to run heaps of wires to your flight controller.

Im new to racing quads and thinking to get Spektrum DX6 with Lemon dsmx receiver for the RCimmersion Vortex. Anyone know the range with that setup? I have tried searching what the range is with that combo but nothing..

I heard Taranis is good, but I don't really need all the extra options and channels. Pretty much will be sticking to my DJI phantom and this racing quad. Is the Spektrum also easier to setup and rtf than the Taranis? Just want to keep things simple with the whole setup

The dx6 will be fine, though I wouldn't go further than a say 100 yards with a lemon rx/orange rx. Those don't have great range, from my experience. You should have room in a mini quad for a true spectrum rx. It's better to be safe and spend a little extra for a good rx, or just fly relatively close.

This. I just jam it into my backpack, if the sticks break, i'll just buy a new gimbal. No need to be delicate with it.
