StevensAero Fokker D7

Hi,
I am surprised that there seems to be no thread on the Fokker D7 micro plane form StevenAero already.
If I missed it, please reply with a link.

I just put mine together last week and it's a sweet flyer despite a nasty warp I managed to install in the left wings - yikes!

I decided to seal and paint the wood under the covering which added a hefty 3g to the structure.
It came in at 1.3oz AUW and has plenty of power for loops while floating well at 30% power.

The color scheme is loosely that of Kurt Monnington, here represented looking over his shoulder while chomping on a stogie and sporting a black scarf to match his black Boche heart! (No disrespect to the departed, I'm sure he was a gentleman and a sweetheart )

As usual, it was an enjoyable build. The only challenging part was fitting the cabane struts in. I wish it had been somehow possible to work the placement of those in with the top wing jig.

Anyway, it's a great little plane and a nice complement to my SA SE5
I don't have any static pictures yet, but here's a few inflight shots.

Get one!

I bet no-man's land wasn't this green!

Thanks for looking. Get one!

Wow! Looks great. The DVII flies great Speedy01, Gene and I built a paper to Depron one a while back and it's a sweet flying machine like the real one was.

Again excellent job and as usual great pic's Blaz.

It's lovely and impeccably finished from what I can see. Fantastic pictures!

I would love to build this and the SE5a but $50 shipping for 2 kits is a deal breaker for me. On top of that I would have to add 25% tax, duty and fees. Sometimes it sucks living on a far away island......

You wouldn't suspect that he's a professional photographer, would you? ....

His pics are as great as his builds!

Thanks guys. High (and undeserved) praise from the masters of micro scratch build!

Yes, the photos had to be carefully chosen to hide the warp in the left wing.
I tried taking it out with an iron, it improved but still there.
Oh well, lesson learned. I still struggle with the iron on covering process.
BTW I forgot to mention the dummy engine is an altered foam one from the FZ albatros and the guns are a paper laser cut pair.
Hope to get a video soon.
Thanks again

I'm looking forward to seeing other builds/color schemes here.

Beautiful build! I'll take still pictures of that quality over video any day.

A list of finishing materials as well as rc gear would be great.

i posted about it when i spotted a pre-release protoptype version in a show photo. your version looks great. i am waiting for the uk stockist to get these in, going to chase via email just now!

i really fancy a printed tissue approach with this(and the SE5). is there anyway we can get outlines from Stevens Aero to produce printed tissue pdfs from? i think these would be a great resource for the flyers who want to produce something a bit different.

agree with Gene on the details of laser cut paper guns. i would order a few sets of them.
also is your pilot a flyzone item?

Great looking Fokker and awesome pictures. What lens was used to shoot these?

Not Star's gear, but here's the well done manual, if that's any help.

Paul,

The manual I linked to above has "rough" outlines of the parts sheets. Those ought to be good enough to size and start your tissue patterns (to be refined when you get your kit). I use skins from a flight simulation called Rise of Flight to do my tissue, but there are obviously easier ways, depending on the scheme you select. I'm sure your Little Fokker will fit in nicely with your great Jin builds!

Ah! I couldn't remember the details of the gun kits and thought I could slide it by, but you guys are too sharp.
The guns came with kits I ordered from dpcmodels and Dave was nice enough to sell me a couple of extra guns. Those kits look great, but I'm still a little intimidated by them.

Regarding the guts of the Stevens D7: I'm using a P51 brushed motor and a receiver brick from the miniVapor.

Regarding the lens: I'm tempted to say I used my iphone for the pix, but no, it was a 70-200mm zoom. Nothing fancy.

One last comment/ tip about this kit which I forgot to mention at he beginning:
Where the parts are symmetrical on an SA kit I usually flip them around when building get structure. ie use the left side piece on the right side and vice versa.
What this achieves for me is the the part number laser etchings end up on the inside of the structure or facing the interior and therefore I don't have to fuss too much about sanding or obscuring them with paint/ covering.
In the case of the D7 if you do this on the left and right fuselage sides, you will miss out on the oval etching and the front of the nose in the "engine area"
Not a huge deal, but one more thing to hand draw back in.

Thanks

Edit:
Oh and for the pilot, it is a foam bust bigger than the FZ ones.
I really can't remember where it came from. It must have been for a WWII plane because I had to sand off his headphones and mask and carve him a bit of a mouth
