El'iot Slope Plane

Hi!

Here's something a little different. Several years ago, I received the El'iot slope plane from a good friend. It's portable and came with a travel case. After some TLC, new battery and new tail string, it's ready to go. AUW is 17.8 oz (505 grams), so it might need a little wind to keep it flying. For control, the servos deflect the wing trailing edge to change the camber. The tail is fixed. The ends of the wings and tail boom have a slot that the string slides into. This keeps the wings and tail tight and in the correct position.

Here's the manufacture's web page from the Internet Archive: Spirale

I'll post a video of the first flight as soon as I can find a suitable slope in my area. If anyone else has flown one of these, please let me know what you think.

I think you should let Steeg look at it before you fly it. Maybe he would be able to fix his. THis thing is so interesting!

Hi!

I did a test flight today. I didn't have a good slope and the wind was slightly off, but the plane did show potential. I only got a minute or two from several flights before either the wind died down or gusted to push the plane behind me and then floated down to land. I had a rough landing on one flight and noticed that the wing retainer pin in the fuse had moved and allowed the fabric to come out a bit. I'll have to modify the pins so they won't be able to move around. I'm also thinking of use thicker piano wire for added reassurance.

It really looks great in the air and roll response wasn't too bad. I really need to find a better slope site so I can get some decent air time to wring out the plane.

Steeg: Do you remember if the retainer pins looked like piano wire bent into an "L" shape? Also, does the tail retainer string look like you remember?

I could probably drop 5 ounces or so if switched to a lipo and some digital servos. After I fly it for a while, I might consider the new battery and servos. In the meantime, I can't wait to fly it again. Sorry I couldn't take any video of the flight. I was alone and only had my cell phone for video.

Very cool

There must be a LOT of weight at the nose to get the CG right.

There isnt any way that i see to remove 1/3 of its weight by changing out a battery...unless there's currently lots of TAIL weight in it to balance your heavy battery. If it's balanced already, then that's all you get...what with a tail and no nose in which to rearrange gear.
