Build Log
F89 mkI Scorpian

I started the build of Wm. Brown's rendition of my F89 Scorpian.

Using my cut files for the fuse formers, Wm generated a great set of drawings plus a short kit of beautifully laser cut parts. The cutting was done by Manzano Laser. I received the kit about a month ago but home work took precedence.

I always start with the wings as that is the part I dislike building the most, especially the shaping of the leading edge. Now that I am this far I will put them aside until I decide what to do about retracts. I've been looking at the E-Flite electric retracts (.15-.25 size) and they look real slick. Does anybody have any comments about them?

My existing F89 weighs in at 78 oz and I guessing the new F89 will be about 90 oz with the retracts and scale tip tanks if I stay with 4S batteries.

I will be using twin 70mm fans and HET motors and I thinking I'll go to either 5S or 6S batts to get the weight down. I would like to use Wemo MF480's but they seem to be scarce so I'm open to suggestions.

The new wing has a span of 50.5 inches, just a hair bigger than my original. At 90 oz., the new F89 will have a wing loading of 30 oz/sq.ft. The existing F89 has a wing loading of 26 oz/sq.ft. The 30 oz/sq.ft. wing load scares me which is why I will go to either 5 or 6S.

Here's a pic showing the new wing and the original

use HET 6904's they will pull a few more amps ,but make more watts ...and sound better. if you really want it to sound nice use the Efflux R/C all alloy fans ,there is vid of it in my Draken thread.

Guys,

Thanks for the info.

BRUFF,

Is there a separate nose retract? At the price shown, they are certainly worth a try.

Glad you have started, I will have to hump to keep up. I am working the tooling for the vac formed inlets right now. Have not started building mine yet, but the work table is ready

I was modifying one for nose gear but found this http://www.nitroplanes.com/60p-t28-frontretract.html . Bought one so far it works fine.

Bob,

Can I just use a "Y" or perhaps a "W" wiring harness to connect the three servos? Then do I just plug the whole thing into the retract channel?
Never had retracts so I'm in new territory.

Do the mains come with struts or is that something I have to provide?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, just wire them all to one channel. Horizon sell a three to one servo extension for their retracts.

Bob,

Thanks for the info.

Some progress on the F89...

I decided to finish building the wing and tip tanks, small models in of themselves. The tanks are ~ 20" long by 2.6" in diameter or scale 20 ft x 32". They are removable, they will be held on either with magnets or velcro, to help both in transportation as well as some of the dicey landings I've been known to make.

Sheeting is 1/32nd balsa

Still need to buy a set of retracts.

Started on the left half of the fuse, working from the front to the back. Mounted the WM400/HET3W.

Laser cutting is very nice, even on the plywood parts

Gents,

Thanks for the comments.

This is a builder's kit so I wouldn't recommend it to someone who has never tackled a project like this before but you guys would enjoy this one.

This morning I'm installing the ducting then add the last of the formers, then the stringers. Once that is done I can take this side off the board and go over all of the glue joints. For plywood to plywood I'm using "super-phatic", graciously supplied by Wm. Brown
