Mini-Review
GW008 Skull Drone, a new sporty quadcopter (Under construction)

INTRODUCTION

Here is a new beasty nanoquadcopter, the GW008 Skull Drone a direct clone of the excellent UDI U939.
This model thanks to its larger motors offer more outdoors capacities without sacrifying indoors goodies.

BOX CONTENT

+ 1 x GW008 Skull Drone (with a 1S 150mAh LiPo directly soldered)
+ 1 x Transmitter (using 4xAAA batteries not included)
+ 1 x USB charging cable
+ 4 x Spare props (2 CW, 2 CCW)
+ 1 x Screwdriver
+ 1 x Instruction manual (English)

OVERVIEW

The U939 recloning is obvious: same canopy type, same lower part with transparent LEDs support. In another hand, the props are larger for the GW008 offering probably more thrust.

-Front view

Two white eyes give orientation. Out of the box, the bodyguard is pre-installed. Just pull gently to remove the two tiny clips per arm.
The plastic is a matte/smooth model.

-Side view

-Rear view

The four arms bight in orange color.

-Upper view

-Bottom view

As for the UDI, the battery can be removed. There is enough room to welcome a 200mAh as soon as you have to check the polarities of the battery.

-Weight

The GW008 is even slight lighter than the U939 (0.3g lighter)

Motors

Motors are 6mmx15mm coreless type so stronger than usual 6mmx12mm usualy used for nanos

LiPo

A 150mAh 1 cell LiPo battery ending with a 1.25mm miniJST connector. No discharge rate mentioned. Be aware, the connector are inverted versus the classic "miniJST" nomenclature. It means you will need absolutly to use the associated USB charger (put some mark on it), the same type of battery (U839/U939 batteries are compatible).

Disassembling

Just unclip the two latteral attach to pull the canopy part

The XN297 is used for the 2.4G part, the so classic MPU6050 for the 6-axis stabilization. Good news, the protocol is the same than for the CX-10 "green" edition, already hacked in DeviationTX.

The 2.4G antenna is perfectly tuned to 33mm

Just drill a small hole on the canopy to install vertically the antenna to extend the control range in the horizontal plane

Transmitter

4 x AAA to feed the transmitter. Notice, you need to tight screws to lock the battery door, it's a little bit annoying

The two shoulder buttons are trim buttons. In practice, only one flip button and one speed mode. No headless and pseudo one key return.
The flip button is harder to press than a classic shoulder one. To calibrate gyros, you need to turn on first the quad then while pressing the speed button to turn the radio and wait leds to flash. Can be done only once per session.

FIRST USAGE

When controlled with a Devo7E TX

GW008 first outdoors test with devo7E (Courtesy Banggood) (4 min 22 sec)

and with the original TX

CONCLUSIONS

Probably one the best nanoquadcopter in the market: powerfull, stable, fast, good range, oudoors able and good flight time. WIth its full propguard, the GW008 is also suitable for beginners. Minor con points (none standard miniJST connector, none shoulder flip button). WIth a potential payload of 3-4g, it would be posible to install a microFPV setup.

UNBOXING

PROS

+ Great flyer
+ Super smooth and precize
+ Nice packagaging
+ Good radio range out of the box (approx 40-50m)
+ DeviationTX compatible (CX-10/Green protocol)
+ More than 6min of flying duration
+ Removable LiPo
+ Bodyguard

CONS

- Flip button should located on shoulder
- Yaw not proportional to speed mode (constant for the two rates)
- Inverted LiPo/connector polarities
- Calibration procedure

This quadcopter have been courtesy provided by Banggood in order to make a fair and not biased review. I would like to thanks them for this attitude.
You can find it actually for 18USD at http://www.banggood.com/GW008-Mini-Skull-2_4G-4CH-6Axis-Automatic-Parallel-System-3D-Rolling-RC-Quadcopter-p-999563.html

We told you that you would like this one.

Good detailed review, and how does it fly compared to the 939?

Great autopsy! I hope they don't make any 'silent upgrades' to this one. I just wish there were more colours to collect. Any potential as a mini FPV platform you think?

There is a red edition too ... but it's true more flashy colors can be nice

A very nice flyer
but I want to mod this one.

All white LEDs on the FCB channel the light through the red/orange tinted plastic arms
like optic fibre. So not as colourful.

The skull needs some plastic surgery Muhahaha !

With "yaw not proportional" you mean the yaw will no change between beginner setting and advanced, right? Because the yaw is very smooth and very proportional, as in it responds well to stick commands.

If that is what you mean, it might be more clear if you change it too "same yaw speed on all rates" or so.

Yes you are right. In general, "yaw not proportional" means "Yaw not proportional with speed mode"

I remember you turning the u207 into a little FPV quad. It's where I got the thought that the GW008 might be able to do the same. That's a JXD 392 next to it?
