Embassies are 'quiet and peaceful' establishments that try to maintain a low profile - I've worked in embassies and never, did I see an obviously armed guard or a piece of ordnance lying in full view!

Look on the roof and you may see a few wires - other than that, they tend not to stand out!

LA times article on the militia support for the embassy. The militia members as well as two civilian guards employed by Blue Mountain, a British firm that in May was awarded a $783,000 State Department contract to help secure the compound,were responsible for safety.
