Sony RX100 3-Axis Camera Gimbal

Finally someone is making a gimbal for the RX100. This popular compact shooter takes amazing photos and video and is really tiny for what it does. It lightweight and makes for a great aerial camera if only you had a good gimbal to stabilize it. Well, the wait is almost over as Thunder Tiger recently teased some photos and rendered video showing their Ghost quad copter with a 3-axis Morpheus camera gimbal for the RX100. No word on pricing or details just yet, but its nice to know that this is coming.

The main drawback with the RX100 (I have one, btw) for AP is that video-out is only available as HDMI. Would be nice if a gimbal designed specifically for this camera handled the conversion to analog. Ideally shutter operation as well - the port on the RX100 II and III supports both video start/stop and still frame shooting, and also multi-speed zoom ...

Rx100 has no camera trigger option for remote use, such as IR led. This is a deal breaker for embarking this on a brushless gimbal.
Sony NEX series is on the contrary to this model perfect for the job.

That's only true of the original RX100. As I said, the RX100 II and III both support remote operation of shutter / video start & stop / zoom. This is via cable connection though, not IR.

I ordered this: http://www.gentles.ltd.uk/gentwire/multi.htm
It's on its way. We'll see. Supposed to control focus/shutter, video on/off, zoom, camera on/off. I cobbled up a focus/shutter system (You can look at my blog if you want.)

There is such a gimbal and I have it. It's the Walkera G-3S.

This Morpheous is not the first 3-axis RX100 gimbal by any means!

I use the Gentles combined video-out/shutter cable on my Ricoh GR - excellent product.

So you guys recommend the gentwire you linked to, to control the camera.

What do you use to do FPV through the camera?

I have the RX100 II

I'm not sure I recommend it yet, as I don't have it yet. But it is what I'm waiting for.

The Walkera RX100 gimbal has a video converter for FPV.

I am not really looking for a gimbal for it yet. That day will come but for now I just want to do AP with the RX100 II.
I want to do something like this but without spending 599 euros or 750 dollars.

You could have Walkera's 3 axis RX100 gimbal only $14 more than half that $750! It has the video converter built in as well as a gimbal controller. It sells for $389. You may as well go for a gimbal now if you're looking at $750 as a metric.

I am not going to do the $750. That is why I am trying to find what I need for camera control and FPV through the camera. Those items will be less than $100 and then a friend is going to 3D print the rest.

I just posted that link to show what I am trying to do.

When I want something and am unsure of what I'm looking for I look at pictures and follow the links of what looks likely. Just be sure to get one with a micro HDMI connector. Most have mini connectors:

When I first got my RX100 II I couldn't find an HDMI converter with micro HDMI.

I ended up getting one with mini HDMI and a mini/micro adapter plug but that was a pain sticking out of the side of the camera. The converter itself also didn't work very well ... sometimes it flipped into mono, other times it just died. It wasn't the adapter plug as I tried it with another device that had a mini HDMI and got the same.

That was the point where I decided to cut my losses and got a Ricoh GR for AP, since I only wanted to shoot stills.

For FPV you need an HDMI converter (as discussed above) to switch the output video into analog that can be transmitted.

For camera control you have to choose basic shutter control via:

http://www.mobilexcopter.com/shop.ht...ct/id=39867797

or

http://www.gentles.ltd.uk/gentwire/f...m?filter=rx100

(maybe other products too but those are the ones I know of)

Or option 2, full control (including zoom etc.) via this:

http://www.gentles.ltd.uk/gentwire/m...m?filter=rx100

(again, this is the one I know about, there may be others)

The latter solution is better but more expensive.
