Proud father!!!

Here's my completed Afriel 560mm with the full-sized one behind. Ended up at 55.7g rtf including AP05 motor, Plush 6A controller, 2.5g Hobby King servos, AR6300 rx and 2s 130mAh Fullriver cells. Had a quick flight in the garden and all seems well.

I was pleased with the weight but you've got to work for it. Milling saved 4g. I removed the hearshrink from the controller and soldered the wires from the motor directly to it...saved a gram. I also replaced the futaba-style servo lead on the esc with a micro jst one and this saved another gram. Fuselage bracing is 0.6mm carbon (horrible stuff to work with) and 1mm for the wings. Pushrods are 0.8mm. Custom horns and motor mount. It'll be nice to get in the sports hall to see how it compares to other small models like the micro Extra and 4-site.

Thanks again to Andy for sharing this great design.

Wow, 11.3g lighter than mine, nice work Mike. It will be ballistic at that weight Let us know how it goes. I have put some rear fusalage bracing on mine and still working on the c of g.

The little Afriel flew very nicely after sorting out the CG and knife edge coupling. Ailerons were way too sensitive at first...you don't need much movement on these little models. Ample power for hovering with plenty in reserve to punch out. After a few flights getting it trimmed I flew the big Afriel and it was strange...really slow and floaty in comparison.

Only issue was in later flights there were horrible glitches. I initially thought it was the elevator servo (poor quality maybe?) but could it be the antenna on the AR6300 receiver touching the carbon bracing? I'll make sure I tape it down so it can't touch any more and hope that fixes it. Oh, and one of the servos was much much slower than the other two. Glad I noticed before the build because I was able to put this on the rudder. Any one else noticing quality control issues with these Hobby King 2.5g servos?

Sorry for making you wait so long for this little piece of info. My 560mm Afriel balances 152mm back from the nose. Inverted needs a very slight touch of down.

BTW, I taped the receiver down and the glitches stopped, so I was probably right that the antenna touching the carbon bracing caused the glitches.

I have some small plastic horns, do you recommend using CF pushrods?
Also do you have one or two servos for the Ail control?
Thanks

My preferred method is to use CF pushrods with heatshrink linkages. Closed loop (pull-pull) using kevlar thread is a little lighter but more fiddly to set up and prone to more trim changes between sessions.
