Question
Not Sure I Want To, But.......

I am not sure that I want to yet, but if I decide to convert a 3.4 meter, 3000 gram plane to electric, what motor/folding prop would anyone suggest? Not looking for 15 seconds to 200 meters. Just fly and float.

Do you have a battery voltage in mind? As you'll likely want about 450W +, 3s or 4s can do the job at reasonable current.
What motor constraints are there? For example can a 35mm outrunner fit in the nose with enough clearance for the wires, or is the nose so skinny you're limited to a geared 28mm inrunner.

As a canned example, a Turnigy SK3 3858-840 glider drive with a 14x8 60A ESC and 3s 3300 would use about 530W and give all the performance you'd need

+1 for the above, had such combo in a 2200 grams 3m BoT and was too powerful.

Thanks. That is the information I was looking for. The nose is actually quite roomy as it is a Minimoa I am thinking about converting. I haven't decided for sure, yet. But where I fly, it is basically electric or use a high-start. I know of several possible ridges, but all are on private land or covered by high voltage lines. The SK3 sounds like the perfect thing as I am planning on either 3s or 4s power.

Please, don't electrify a Minimoa !
A prop in that nose will destroy the look of the plane...

You are most probably correct. It is a hard decision. As I said, I haven't decided, yet. The plane is bought, but not delivered. I should have it by the end of next week or first part of the week after. It is my first scale glider, so I am very hesitant about modifying it. If I can get any time aloft at all with a high start, I will probably leave it as is.

I would rather think to a retractable pylon instead nose prop... you have plenty of space in that fat fuselage...

Renatoa, that is nice. But cost prohibitive. I could get a custom spinner made to match the original nose shape for a lot less. Anyway, I am going to fly it from a high-start for a while first. And I have others to finish and fly with motors. I am not going to do anything for a while. Just wanted to know what people thought were good options for the weight and span.

Picked up the Minimoa today. Just took ten hours of driving to get there and back! Houston traffic has to be the worst in Texas! Oh, well I am back home and the plane is safely stashed for now. I need o get it fitted out and balanced. Then take it for some hand tossing at the flying field to try to get it trimmed. Pretty heavy plane for us old guys to be hand tossing, though.

Hi-Start (or Up-Start if space is limited)?

I just refurbished a 3m, 2376 gram plane and it flies great and lands like a dream with crow. It doesn't rocket into space, but has no problem getting up at all.
