Build Log
2m DS plane Build (Afterburner)

Hi I was not going to do a build thread on this plane for the simple resin I am not big
on posting, in five years I have posted just over 600 times so if I don't answer or reply to posts don't get up set.
Tim came round tonight and had a look at what I was doing and has convinced me to doing a build log.
I am building a 2m T tail DS plane it is going to be called a Afterburner, I have had a good look around and can't find any planes called this so at the moment this is going to be the name for this plane.
Most of you will know I build a plane called a Windburner it also is called a Burner for short, this plane is the first plane I have built after the Burner so thats where the name has come from, After the Burner Afterburner. (Thanks Paul it was his idea to call it that)
I have made it similar to the Windburner in the sense that it has the same plan form root cord and tip cord as the Burner but stretched to 2m the nose on the fuse is the same but a bit longer, it will be a T tail it is easier to build and to mount a servo in the tail for elevator.
Airfoiles this has been a long process, I have allways been interested in pylon racing airfoils for DS have tried some of them in the parst with good results the one I have chosen is the MH 16.

Great Kev, glad Tim talked you into a build log.
Your method of using of using MDF with a template each end, then shaped with a hand plane and sanding block is very interesting. Quick, cheap and the finished result looks to be very accurate to the airfoil.
I reckon there are lots of modellers like myself who have used the lost foam, vac bag methods etc. who would like to get into molding, but it can all seem a bit daunting, this looks like a good simplistic way of making the plugs that I reckon even I can do!
Following with interest and looking forward to seeing this model do some fast DS laps.

Hope your new plane turns out a winner, Kev.
The name would be a demon choice even if it wasn't so apt

Very cool kev
I was very impressed last night , Kevin is doing this a very unique way and the results are amazing.
If Kevin told me last night that AVB cut him a test panel on his new CNC i 100% would have believed him.
The Finnish is great and checking it with a ruler ( tip to tip) is perfect. Running the MH16 with be interesting as it has a lot of top end speed (300mph + ) , will this be the worlds first 400mph KB hand ground DSer..........?????
The blokes got an Eye for speed , he hand ground a 48 plank to do 331 so I guess we will just have to see.

Nice Kevin! Thanks for posting this. I had no idea MDF could be planed so nicely. Excellent technique.

nice work - watching that video made me realise how much we are/did do in common when I built my all-wood (Pauliwonia) 60" plank (Spruce-Goose). Except I used a #7 plane, and my finished wing was the finished wing, and not a plug. I really must do a retrospective build thead/post sometime.

Kev, you are brilliant. I just love it. You make everyone else look silly, the way you work out quick and practical ways to do things - and you do them with great skill. Top stuff mate, I love your work. Who would have thought the hand sanded 'Burner shape would hold the world plank record! It's a legendary story, gives me a grin every time - and I hope this new project is every bit as successful.
