Volvo 70

Hi

Has anyone built a Volvo 70 rc yacht? Interested in building one, and have the set of plans of Ericsson from the 2006 race. However, Im struggling to find someone who can print them out as they are too large. Is anyone able to help me transfer them off the pdf so I can print the bulkheads at the correct scale? Currently, there is a whole lot of white useless space on them.

Thanks

you probably need someone with a plotter to print them. Here in the US we have a place called Kinkos, and some of them can print that large. Also an office supply chain of stores called Staples. If you have a place like that in NZ, you may be able to get the printing done there.

Also you can try places that print maps.

I hope that helps.

I did exactly that at a Kinko's recently. They scanned a large set of plans into a PDF, then printed a couple copies in the same size. Cost all of five or ten dollars.

Now, is there a Kiwi version of Office Depot or Kinko's available?

I use a free program called PDF Exchange Editor.
This has many features not on the Adobe Reader the important one here being the ability to print off just whatever part of the plan you want. Get the bulkhead in monitor frame and print off current page only at 100%.

That's a great point, Rusty Nail. When I printed out the plans to build, I just printed each station on a regular sheet of paper. Doing it at home let me mess with the scaling to get it exactly the right size.

PDF Exchange Editor has on the print page, options for scaling under custom zoom.
Can set to whole digits only so set to 69%.
Make sure to have a measured value to check against on the printed page in horizontal and vertical.
You would have to cut up your nice large printed plan to make bits so might as well print just those required to stick on the material to cut out.

However remember that large scaling can stuff up your displacement.
Surface area increases as the square of any linear scaling, and volume (displacement/mass) increases as the cube.
Much safer to choose a design that is close to your required size.

I printed out one of the images at 100%, measured a fixed distance (the distance between each station), then calculated what I needed it to be (in my case, 112%, I think). Then I printed again. In the section that allows you to choose Actual Size, Scaled to Fit, etc, I chose Scale and put in 112%. I had to mess around a bit to then get the correct part of the image in the view I was printing.

Another option would be printing one out full size, doing the same calculation, then photocopying it with reduce/enlarge.
