I took my SSS to the desert last weekend. There was a rocket event and the plane was used to look for lost rockets. The SSS flew very well with an arkbird OSD and dragon link radio system and handled the desert wind like a champ. I'm not using the flaps but it didn't seem to be a problem in the desert where you can land anywhere you want. With that said, even without flaps the plane slows down very nicely for gentle touchdowns.

So far, I'm very impressed with the plane.

Since the SSS comes stock with 17g servos, I bought these:

and had to replace an aileron servo and they work great!!

Go the Taranis, Kevin
FWIW I recently bought one, it is a very very good radio. Never thought I'd find a radio that would replace my Futaba 9C & 10C but it will be the radio to replace all my radios.

We will.

In the MEANTIME, however, our Turnigy 9X's with er9X firmware and the FrSky module/receiver are ROCK SOLID. So I'm pretty happy with FINALLY getting NO glitching. I tested it all week (so far only in my Bixler 1.1...but will test with the SSS soon) and it was completely and utterly glitch-free. So I'm a HUGE new fan boi of anything made by FrSky. Great stuff!

Can't wait to hook up the FPV and see how far out we get before we start to lose connection.

It is a compromise, though. Folks have asked what did I use to build the servo box? I used some Birch plywood, and the base of the letter "I" from Hobby Lobby. Glued the plywood to the paper mache, and presto! Servo box.

Couple places we found, detailed in the SSS FAQ page in this thread:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...6#post22886340

Scroll down a post or so, to "Structural modification" and "Main wing spar".

Specifically, you can get a 48" or 60" carbon fiber tube at goodwinds.com.

48":
https://goodwinds.com/20039.html

60":
https://goodwinds.com/20034.html

I personally like the 60" version (which is what I ordered) because it covers more of the wing area. You know...for those times when your receiver's antenna has pulled out and your SSS is in a full throttle accelerated stall towards someone's house and you pull 19G's out of it. Yeah...that!

Sincerely,

(Re-)Build Updates

Here's some more pics of the (re-)build. I've been busy with work, so this has been on the back burner for a while. Cleaned up the basement, and put the plane together. I am now taping (note partially taped nose in photos).

Same old LG, same old set up but the electronics module is a new design. All balsa, pretty light.

Hope to get it flying by mid-August.
