Newbie

Hey guys, newbie here. Getting into flying and am purchasing a Vapor today at a LHS after flying a friends this past weekend, Wow how cool. Anyway, I'm already planning on a second plane and have decided on a foamie. Any good foam trainers out there?

THANKS

Bill

HZ Super Cub and Multiplex EasyStar are two which come to mind.

I heard a lot of good things about HZ, thanks

Actually I'm looking for a profile foamy. Maybe there isn't any.

Since you are in the kit foamies section, I presume you are interested in building kits. A couple spring to mind beyond the ones mentioned above. The GWS E-Starter is a good one. Very easy to fly and can be built as a 3 or 4 channel plane (i.e. with or w/o ailerons). The multiplex mentor gets some good words as a trainer, too.

You'll be better off with the EasyStar.

Stick with EPP and under 8.5oz if you want to learn how to fly. Very fixable. I loved the Slofly28, but I think you have to build it, there might be someone cutting the kits and selling em. Our Yedge kits are nice but maybe more for the 3rdplane/ practice 3d pane.

You need to answer a couple questions first:

How much are you willing to spend?

What would you consider your skill level to be? -Newbie obviously, but how is your hand-eye coordination and orientation when flying your vapor/ember?

Do you want another 3-channel, or want to start a 4-channel?

Do you want to build a kit, or have it RTF?

Spend as least as possible till I make it to balsas.

i picked up the Vapor yesterday like second nature. RC controls I'm very familiar with, been doing cars and boats from the 80's to present. Now officially going to planes.

I like the idea of a kit with both 3 and 4 ch capabilities. (start w/3 then possibly ugrade to 4)

I also like the idea of building, lets remember thats what got me into the hobby to begin with.

Generally people don't start with foam then "end up" with balsa.. With the advent of elapor and epp it's not a thing of "I have a balsa plane so I am more advanced flier". People have found out soem high density foam is much better than wooden stuff. Like it was in the past. 2 different animals.

Eh, balsa vs foam is mostly a matter of preference anymore. Here's a quick synopsis though:

Generally speaking, China has made foam planes cheaper than Balsa, and foam is a lot easier to repair after crashes. Balsa is a lot heartier though, and light crashes rarely break anything... -But if you do break something, repairs are usually a lot more complex. Also, balsa wings and control surfaces have less "give" than foam, so for extremely precise flying, balsa is preferred.

Most of this is arguable, but generally accepted.

I fly both and love both. I'll actually warm-up so to speak with a foamy before flying a balsa. I learned on foam then went right to balsas. So glad I went with foam first.
