AXI Stuttering...

I've just setup my new AXI 2212/34 with a 3s 1500 mah lipo through a pheonix 25 esc, and the motor won't start. It stutters for a minute...then stops. I'm throwing a 10x4.7 APC prop. Anyone know why this is??

Yeah...

It's on a Tuff-E from Northeastern Sailplanes, it's a 13-14 oz. EPP foam plane.

Sounds like the Phoenix. I had a lot of issues with an Ultrafly outrunner and the Phoenix 25. What version of firmware are you running. I think they are up to 1.07b last time I looked and it nearly has it running correctly. Also check your timing.

If it is programmable, then yes. Latest version is now 1.08b, which I am currently downloading as I type. Updates can be found at

The USB link isn't all that expensive and I fell is worth the money.

sounds like a cold solder joint.

Double check all your connections.

If you spin it by hand when it's doing that, does it start then? If not, the motor may have a shorted phase. Another way to tell is to disconnect the ESC and spin it. If it feels stiff and stops immediatly--it's got a shorted wire in one of the phases.

Gizmo - You can reprogram the settings without the link. I would look into the solder joints first, then set the timeing advance lower than the default setting.

Quacker - A shorted phase will make the motor turn stiffly ? I wasen't aware of this, untill now.

Sure. You can try it yourself by shorting any 2 phase wires together and spinning it(a prop helps). The motor acts like a generator but all the energy will go into the short. Try it--you'll be amazed.

My 2212-26 AXI starts and runs just fine on the default PHX25 settings (not sure what programming mine has... I bought it several months ago. AXI recommends advanced timing settings, but I left mine at default. I tried the advanced setting but could not see any significant difference in the starting or running ( I didn't do any test stand measurements). I'd make sure the PHX is set to factory defaults and start from there. If it won't start without hesitation, then I doubt the ESC is the problem.

I've tried with the default settings...one thing that I've heard...some of the PHX 25's, particularly if you've purchased it a while ago has a software problem that can be fixed with a download from the CC site. So I'll try that fix first, if it's not that, then I'll send the motor back. I've checked and rechecked the solder joints, and that's most definitely not the problem.
