It's one of those "so ugly it's cute" airplanes. You are right, it is no raving beauty.
I've got 10 hours in my logbook in a CH-701 and it is one of the most fun and amazing planes I've flown. It will take off and land in crazy short distances, and it has delightfully light controls. I'm sure it'd make a good model, but I suspect it would have a glide ratio similar to the original (approximately 4:1!!)
