Tower Hobbies Uproar 40 Conversion

Returning to modeling after 9 years away. I've flown my first electric RTF recently, a Hobby King Skipper with success proving I still can fly. So, for the rest of the year I'll be away from the water and will be pulling a kit out of storage to build. That kit is an Uproar 40 ARF. I have so many un built kits, that conversion seems the way to go.

So naturally posting in this forum, I am looking for motor/battery recommendations with prop size being the biggest factor, an 11 inch diameter and keeping this as a sport flyer with a good watts/pound ratio (approximately 4 pounds). I've seen the motors that claim 32 or 46 glow, but find the labeling misleading. From there the specs get confusing.

There was just a conversion of this plane. I will find the link.

Hobbyking has been very good to me. Very minimal failures for dirt cheap, and I fly hard.

Good or bad, things got ordered today. I ended up finding another forum post about a similar setup. When I get these items from HK and setup, I'll check back with results. Some place I have a Watts Up and a RPM checker.

Might be a little too much prop on 4 cells, but the watt meter will tell you for sure.

Tucci...

I tried one of those e-motor calculators and it figured the prop combo might be too much also. I believe 11x55.5e is the smallest 11 inch prop 'pitch wise' you can get. Would a 10x5e or less pitch be the correct way to go? How does cell count effect prop sizing?

3dFlyingmaster...

Didn't understand your question.

The title was originally Kaos 40 conversion, now its Uproar 40 conversion.

Change your mind?

Nope.... always an Uproar. But changing my mind, maybe. I'm a little concerned I may have undersized my motor. My motor might have to run faster with a smaller prop, and is unlikely to be very efficient. This is all a geuss at this point for me. Why can't it be like getting a .46 FX?

I would do this...
G32 motor from valuehobby. 12x6 prop. 60 to 80 amp opto esc, 4S 3300 to 3700 mah 40c pack. Plenty of pull with this motor. Have one in a great planes escapade mx.
You can even go with a 13x6 prop. Heck, motor is only 30 bux.

Turnigy 3542

I am using the Turnigy 3542 with a 10 X 6 APC and 4S packs. It produces 580 watts and stays cool under heavy throttle use. I have several hundred flights on it, and it still performs perfectly. I tried the 11 X 5.5. It worked OK, but, the 10X6 is more efficient and provides better speed.

I've always liked shoulder wing planes and the looks of the Uproar & thought about converting one, but I've got too many projects waiting already! Here's a thread on Wattflyer that has some good info (I thought):

Didn't understand your question.
Hope you're still following your own thread. In my experience those e-motor calculators are unreliable, or at least very inconsistent. To answer your question, when you go up in cell count, you typically need to drop the prop diameter and/or pitch to keep the amp draw in check. Personally I would start with the 10x5 and see where you're at with the amp draw. I think that you'll be surprised with the performance of that motor and prop combo on 3s, let alone 4s.
But don't be afraid to experiment!!! I fly several combos that were "deemed false and cancelled" by the calculators, and are also drawing more amps than is recommended by the manufacturers. For a long time, with no reliability issues or any indication of imminent failure. (excessive heat, etc...)
Give it some time. When you get a little experience with these things, you'll start to learn what will work and what is just silly to try.
