Quad gets stuck in helicopter roter and crashes( in the TV show)

Just watching a Chicago fire on NBC in Texas it is about a guy that was flying his quad and hit the roter of the bell helicopter and it crashed in to a building few dead.. They are now getting this in to the movies so they can scare the public of FPV and this hobby.

Watching it now.... It wasn't that bad. It's not like they spent a bunch of time demonizing drones.

Theres no mention of drone and its like 10+ hours old. I guess we'll see. If it's true its actually pretty scary.

You really haven't.
The original very misleading title of this thread was worse than the show
and the show is pretty bad.

Having a fully intact quad/hex/whatever it was *stuck* in the rotors
near the hub was about #20 on my "most unrealistic things" list by the time
I was 15 minutes into that episode of the show. They had your basic
small tourist heli crashing on top of a building, spreading chaos to the whole
surrounding neighborhood. Virtually every item that flew off, hit someone
and the heli "teetered" well away from the edge of the roof for no reason
for 30 minutes while the fire fighters floundered to anchor a lightweight
heli fuselage (missing its motor, rotor assembly and whole tail section) to
something solid and get the door open, while general mayhem ensues
for a block in every direction. Of course the heli finally spontaneously
plummets from the roof, after they've saved the last person, and
they all go back to the firehouse and gossip about one of the crew
leading a exercise dance class..

Yes, it's annoying that a TV show would spread this kind of nonsense but
I've seen worse fear mongering from others in the RC community, right here in this forum.

You've seen it? Can you describe how the multirotor managed to get through the downwash and hit the hub? Much less damage it? I know carbon fiber is really strong but there's still enough torque in that mainshaft to lift a full size helicopter off the ground.

The accident itself wasn't part of the show. The first time we see the multirotor is
when they're trying to lift the unrealistically heavy hub and still half intact rotor blades
off of some hapless woman it's landed on after the whole assembly has supposedly
"rolled" through half a neighborhood's worth of backyard fences. After finally saving
her by disassembling the hub with their impact wrench that conveniently had just
the right aircraft type star shaped socket head, they pull the mostly intact multi
out of the blade linkage a couple feet from the center hub, and take it back to their fire
chief, and that's the last reference to it in the show. They made no commentary negative
or otherwise about the incident whatsoever. They did happen upon the multi pilot who
of course was also hit by debris in the head while he'd been flying from a neighboring
rooftop. They find him after he, with a serious open head wound has stumbled back down
to the ground, and walked half a block back to his garage, where he lies on the floor
still clutching his transmitter, with a small FPV-style LCD screen attached, mumbling "it's all my fault".
The irony is the original multi, the transmitter, the screen, are probably owned by the
studio themselves, and have been used to get shots for this show or some other.
I see *so much* multirotor footage in regular TV shows these days. It's so
ubiquitous that nobody even notices it any more.

We can talk hypotheticals all day but yes of course, if a multi ended up in
the slowest moving part of the rotor assembly, while magically causing instant destruction to
the heli, the multi would *still* get torn to shreds.
The fact that it didn't and this isn't even in the top 10 most unrealistic things in this
episode is pretty amazing.

amazing that you actually sat through a network TV show long enough to pick up on all the crap they create. I mean I think the last network TV show I saw was Seinfeld 16 years ago.

Ya, I normally don't watch much in the way of network TV action/dramas, but cable box
happened to be on that channel when I saw this thread so I ran the DVR back an hour or
so, and watched it.

Downloaded the video. It's using a Spektrum DX8 radio and a bumblebee frame (The one that looks like it's got two eyes). Covered in wires that i have no idea what the purpose is (There are no white wires on a multirotor). Nothing is broken and the velcros are still holding the batteries.

I'm pretty sure Seinfled has a quote about multirotors/drone in his repertoire somewhere
