Camperdown 2017

Tentative dates for the Camperdown event in 2017 are the 21st Jan through 29th Jan. Australia Day will be on the Thursday, so expect a big turnout on that weekend.

The younger crowd are into DS, PSS, scale, hooning, fast low passes, cross dressing, night flying, sharing a few drinks, movie nights and a lot of social interaction.

The more mature gentlemanly types tend to stay the week after the long weekend, flying mainly 2 channel floater types of gliders. They are a very gentle bunch who generally enjoy a quieter, more relaxed gliding experience; often including interaction with local foliage.

Camperdown is located in Victoria's western region, approximately two-and-a-half hours SW of Melbourne, down the Westgate Freeway, which then becomes the Princes Freeway. Continue along this road until you get to the Princes Highway and turn right. Refer to Google Maps.

The town (from Wikipedia)

Camperdown is a historically significant rural town in southwestern Victoria, Australia, 194 kilometres (121 mi) west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the 2011 census, Camperdown had a population of 3,463.

Camperdown lies within the 'Lakes and Craters' region, sitting at the foot of Mount Leura which together with nearby Mount Sugarloaf are part of a large extinct volcanic complex. To the immediate west are the deep volcanic crater lakes Bullen-Merri and Gnotuk while to the east is the crater lake Purrumbete popular for its Trout and Chinook Salmon fishing.

The town is renowned for its classic historical buildings. Central is the 103-foot (31 m) high Gothic Manifold Clock Tower, built 1897, which sits in a wide Elm lined median between the dual carriageways of Manifold Street, named in honour of one of the pioneer pastoralists. Tower, avenue, Boer War memorial, Soldiers' memorial, memorial cross and JC Manifold statue are all listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Among the many other classic buildings are the 1886-7 two storey Georgian style Court House, the 1863 two storey bluestone (granite) Post Office, Theatre Royal (1890) and Masonic Hall (186768).

Accomodation

Camperdown caters for all levels of luxury. You can camp, stay in a Hotel, Motel of even some very nice B & B's. Google Camperdown accomodation:

The majority of us stay at the Lakes and Craters Caravan Park, beside the botanical gardens and only 100 metres or so from the main flying site, which also happens to be one of the most beautiful in the country (see attached photo).

Eateries

Pub grub, upmarket bistro meals, a servo roadhouse, a few great cafes, smaller take-aways (great fish n' chips, pizza shops), a roadhouse are just some of the locations available for eating while you are here.

For those more inclined to cater for themselves, there is a butcher, a poultry shop, chinese food supplies and 3 supermarkets.

Flying sites

There are 4 main flying sites around the town (see attached image).

a/ 'The Point'. This is at the end of the road to (and through) the caravan park. It is for a S - SW wind, which is the predominant wind at this time of year. It is the property of the local shire.

b/ Mt Leura. A small hill at the eastern end of town. Good for NE & SW and the easiest spot to get in some DS'ing. This site is also the location for the annual 'Drops for Hops' competition.

c/ The Doc's. Property of the local doctor. We usually get at least one day per year when there is a howling northerly and this slope offers terrific list and a generous landing area.

d/ Bevan's Dairy farm. The map does not do this site justice. There are 3 distinct slope that can be flown. Another site that offers massive lift and huge landing zones. Suitable for NE to SE winds.

e/ The Vet's. Unfortunately no longer available to us.

The last few years has seen an interest in flying floatplanes on the lake when there is no wind. This is a blast. If you think you may want to try this, Hobby King has PNF floatplanes from around $200.

The Corrangamite RC club operate from the local racecourse which is only a few minutes out of the town centre. Insured pilots are welcomed to fly there - they even allow the use of the smelly, oily planes if you are so inclined.

For those lovers of Dynamic Soaring, it is only a short drive to Red Rock, near Colac, around 45 minutes away, or there is also Johanna, (described as possibly the best DS site in Australia), a SW site approximately 1.5 hours from Camperdown.

If you would like to know what it's about or what we get up to, have a look at previous years threads:

Good stuff Matin.
We have an awesome time there each year.
Hopefully there will be some variety in wind direction and you can fly all the good spots.
