Crestline Soaring Log - Videos, Banter and Other Adventures

I thought I'd start a "Crestline Soaring Log" to document and share some of our adventures in the mountains. We don't get a lot of slopers up here. However, maybe this log will help encourage more people to try out our outstanding slope.

Today the winds were around 22 mph coming straight in. It remains cold here as we try and shake winter from the mountains. We had to wear jackets and sweatshirts today to remain warm.

I had intended to air out the Axis II. Unfortunately, after only 2 minutes of flight, the Axis had a nasty crash and was retired for the day. I had the Sherpa charged up and decided to see what it could do in heavier conditions. It is only 8 oz., so I taped on 2 oz. of lead to the bottom.

Below is a short video of today's session. Greg is the one launching.

Enjoy...I hope to have the Axis back in the air in a day or so.

Could somebody post directions to this slope? Or better yet, a set of GPS coordinates? Any links to nearby weather stations? What are the best wind directions? Foam only? Glass ships OK? How is the landing zone?

I've been wanting to try this place out, but never really knew much about it or where exactly it is.

Thanks!

It occurs to me that if I maintain a Crestline Soaring Log, it will appear that I'm "advertising" my planes since it is only me and one or two others that fly up here. So, for that reason, I'm going to not do a Crestline Soaring Log. Sorry.

You still have to answer Keith's question.

Hi Keith,

Here are the GPS numbers...

34.235932,-117.313128

Basically, you go up HWY 18, and take the Crestline Exit. Feet before the 4-Way stop in Top Town (first stop in Crestline), there is a road to your left called "Crest Forest." Crest Forest winds uphill for quite a ways. Eventually, you will see a road that veers off to the left called "Playground." Once on Playground, the road will continue to wind. You will be looking for a large green structure on your left that holds water. The launch site is about 50 yards past this structure. I hope that helps. You can PM me for more info or if you would like to meet up.

Thanks Paige.

I got them poked into Google Earth.

It's only 432 mi from my house to the flying site. I hope we can fly together soon.

Thanks Paige! I just looked at a topographical map of those coordinates. Looks like an awesome place, and your videos prove it. I'm definitely going to go check it out of these days!

BTW, I don't think that a Crestline Soaring Log would be "advertising".

Crestline is an awesome place to fly, and the flying spot has it's own weather station. You can check the weather conditions by dialing 909-338-3362.
Right now is 41mph and 30degrees.

You can also go to the crestline soaring society website

Paige,
Sure would like to see the LZ and slope area. Any pics to share? Better yet a walk around video like you did the Axis rescue. A nice long shot of the slope edge from end to end going downward that shows its angle and depth would be cool.

E...

Oh here's an overhead shot...There's the dreaded tree!

I'll see what I can do.

The LZ is not the best. However, I've seen worse. It is smaller than most and it is somewhat rocky. Rocks tend to hide in the oddest places. When you think you've safely crash landed in a bush, there is likely a rock hiding there.
