Question
PZ Habu 2 EDF Cooling Issue?

So I was out flying my Habu 2 this morning (about 82 deg F). After the 2.5 minute flight I brought her back in and the ESC was HOT! Hot enough where it kinda burned the back of my fingers when I touched it. On to the question. Are there any mods everyone is doing out there to combat this issue? Anyone out there having similar problems with theirs? I enlarged the hole on the bottom and cut a little foam away on the inside to hopefully improve airflow. My only other idea was to re-mount the esc so that it sat in its original position closest to the battery and lower in front facing the front gear to improve airflow through the fins. Any other ideas.

Oh, the plane is stock with flaps (using recommended servos SV80 long lead) fixed gears, flying with a Nano Tech 3300 4s 35-70C battery.

My guess is your issue is the 35C-70C. I think you will draw more current then a 30C eflite battery. More current and more power/thrust but hotter esc.

Find out what your draw is. It best not be over 60A.

Remember that the Habu does not fly well dead stick. It won't turn at all if you just did a manuever and have low air speed. So if the esc shuts off, you might be out most of your investment.

Just did a test with a fresh battery. It runs 45A @ 701 watts

What battery now for 700 watts?

I've heard folks re-locate the esc to aft of the engine air intake nacelles. I haven't checked the temp on my stock esc but then I usually don't run it when it's the hottest part of the day.

That was with the Nano Tech 4s 3300 35-70C battery. I found that the motor is really only rated for 44 cont A which could be causing my problems. Those nano batteries also boost the numbers substantially. I have seen 100 w + power increases with the same mah size. Right now I programmed in a throttle curve to keep it under. Now it runs about 41A @ 633 watts which should still be way more than I need to fly it well. It may also help to not fly at 11am and start a little earlier at least until it starts to cool down.

You still might over heat your ESC,running part throttle only makes em get hotter.

The throttle curve peaks at 90% instead of 100%

Thats not good for ESC....you may overheat it faster doing that.

well I'm open to suggestions, the stock set up was getting very hot. I cut the vent on the bottom of the landing gear a little bigger so maybe that will help

You can always upgrade ESC,no such thing as going to big....
Move it to ducts like others have for better cooling, but watch length of battery wires, too long and that will cause ESC problems, the 3 motor wires can be longer but not battery wires.

--Stock ESC location is an insulated oven

--Take the wing off and mount ESC flush in the intake duct and forget about it--4s or 5s it works great(no issues with battery cable extensions)

--You will need xacto knife, glue to hold esc, extension cable for battery, and extension for receiver
