Thanks! One more question. For an 80 gram F3P plane, what thickness?

I bought the 2um clear. It is delicate but pretty easy to use following their directions. I have only experimented with it, have not flown it on a indoor plane yet.

I think planes like the Spies use a thicker mylar because they have print on it.

Has anyone tried the Mylar cooking bags. the kind you use to cook turkeys in? Available at the grocery store and not too terribly expensive.

My guess is they would be pretty heavy for the F3P planes. The mylar we are talking about is about one third the weight of 'Saran' wrap.

Afaik, the Mylar Spies kit uses 12 um stuff. The Trivia and Elanor kits use 2 um and 3 um mylar and those are the most popular thicknesses in competitive scratch built planes as well.

The 2 um stuff is very delicate while 3 um is stronger and adds about 1 gram of weight to the plane.

Try FAI Model Supply...

I had good luck with these guys...

faimodelsupply.com

I got one of each that they had for mylar... I selected the .5 mil and .25 mil metalized mylar for my scratch built Carbon Truss 3d... The .25 mil seemed to be plenty strong for an F3P style plane. In retrospect, I didn't consider the possible impact to radio signals with metalized... and probably wouldn't go that direction in the future. But, so far so good, I've flown her several times and not been shot down.

Their packaging was exquisite... here is just the label off of one of the rolls:

Be careful! Mil's are not the same thing as UM's, 1/4 mil is not the same thing as 2 or 3 um. Ive used the mylar from FAI model to cover a model, and when I put the covered pieces on the scale I wanted to cry they were so heavy. The weight difference between a well milled model and 1/2 mil mylar is almost non existent, and its not a lot better with the 1/4 mil stuff either.

Unless my understanding of the measurement system is messed up, 1 micron is = 0.0393700787 mils OR 1 mil is = to 25.4 microns.

Chris

PS. thats not a dig at FAI model supply, they service and packing were both top shelf.

The 0.25 mil is about 6.4 microns, the 0.5 mil is 12.7 microns...
