A reality check from onboard videos

I hope this doesnt make me look like an old grump,
but after making a lot of boring onboard clips,
looking down at subdivisions, hayfields, and freeways,
I find that I much prefer looking at an airplane in flight.

This made me understand, after 40 years, why I dis-enjoyed
my private pilot flying lessons so much. The airplane was
a Piper Super Cruiser, which I had built and flown models of.
What a disappointment it was, to not SEE the airplane while
I was in it-- instead it was refineries, scrub bush, and graveyards
of rusted cars below.

Some old timers out there might recall Bill Hannan, who published
in Model Builder, and also published lots of his own plans of beautiful
models. He confessed to quickly finding flying lessons a disappointment,
and abandoned them.

As a frequent youtube viewer, I wish there were more videos showing
aircraft in flight, both models, and full scale.

When you fly FPV, you are not in it for flying a scale model. The end goal is to experience flying, the plane is just a means to get you up there whether it's a highly detailed cub, or an easystar held together by tape.

There are plane FPVs that fly like this

Two Mile FPV Flight with an 1880 Skywalker FPV RC Plane (4 min 28 sec)

And there are those that fly like this

Eurofighter FPV maiden (6 min 1 sec)

On the multirotor side, it's not much different. There are those that fly like this (So called AP)

DJI Phantom 2 (NOT Vision) 4200 meters/2.5+ Miles FPV Long Distance Flight (11 min 31 sec)

and those that prefer this (Proximity)

FPV - abandoned Bali (3 min 41 sec)

My preference for proximity may also relate to my gaming background. I first started flying helicopters here:

New Heli Practice (6 min 21 sec)

Yep, i used to play warrock (battlefield clone) and would spend hours just flying the helicopter around an empty map. Getting into multirotors and later bixler, i had a clear idea on what i wanted to be able to do, and getting a nice model was not it.

I do make composites whenever someone happened to record my flight tho.

If you're talking about air-to-air videos of planes in flight, they're out there. Just do a search for "RC plane chase" or "RC planes flying formation" and you'll get more hits.

I, like you, also prefer seeing the plane in flight. And I'm also an old guy. Most of my videos are ground based with lots of low and slow flying. But often I'll blend ground and airborne video together. I'm working on combining hat cam video with ground based video plus onboard video too.

All that being said, not everyone wants to see the same thing. Different strokes for different folks.

I have plenty of sunset footage as well as geography that I want to see. And the majority of my videos are for my use or for my friends/family to see. Typically not for general consumption by other Youtube viewers.

Couple of examples of air-to-air videos that I found with a search.

FPV - Team Echelon - Skywalker Formation Flying: Volume #1 (3 min 25 sec)

Jump to 1:05 for the airplane video.

RC Rocket testing and more Sabre chase cam formation (4 min 39 sec)

I forgot to mention... I don't fly FPV.

Just found this video online. It has air-to-air, interesting geography AND a sunset!

FPV Airfield Extreme Surfer Follows FPV Skywalker! (11 min 34 sec)

Here is a video of my son flying a Pitts model 12. Lots of different views of the model from the air.

Hey, thats great, I only looked at the Team Echelon so far, thanks.
I envy those who can edit video clips, I tried different ways, just too much dad-busted rocket science

Actually not. Even with simple VE software like Windows Live Movie Maker you can make some pretty nice looking stuff. And yes, you can splice pieces of different videos together with it.
