Coastal Slope sites in Cumbria UK

Just wanted to start listing some of the sites Copeland Model Club Cumbria use for slope soaring. Hopefully this thread will come in handy for anyone visiting the area with a model stashed in the car.

Thought I'd start with St Bees Head. This is our favourite site, mainly because it is so versatile. We get regular holiday makers stopping at the camp site with a plane in the car.

The slopes in the background of the storm picture are known as the golf course slopes. Facing SW, they come in handy when the lift on the Head becomes too much for foamies and general models. The LZ at the golf slopes suffers from a fair amount of rotor, which can catch mouldie pilots out if they're not aware of it.

My profile picture is taken looking west from behind the old Marchon Chemical Works, looking west-ish along the Head. These cliffs face North, and the lift is phenomenal on a good day.

If you search for 'copeland model club' in GoogleMaps, we've listed several sites we have found and use quite regularly. From here, directions can be found from anywhere in the country. Each site listed includes a brief description.

Excellent info Shaun, thanks very much!

Do you have a club web site?

Steve

EDIT - just found it in one of Andy's posts in the Carlisle thread. http://www.copelandmodelclub.org/

yeah thats our URL, its my first attempt at website design, so be sympathetic. We've just been slope hunting. Found an excellent slope at Harrington, next to a WWII pillbox. Windspeed at sealevel was 15mph, got to the top of the slope 5 mins later and the trusty old Zagi couldnt cope with the 25mph. Made me wish i had me halfpipe finished. LZ was a bit rough (rocks and old WWII buildings), but the foamies will manage. Gonna trial the slope this weekend. Best bit is, its only a couple of minutes from the car park, and your flying. I need to find out who owns the land and get in touch with them. Dont want an irate farmer on my case. I'll post some pictures when i remember to take my camera with me

Ahh, bet you were being paid at the time as well? The golf course slopes are good, were finding new sites all the time. I just flew sea brows in Maryport whilst passing through, so thats another one on the list. Just need pictures now

This is a picture of the flying site found at Copperas Hill Harrington. The pillbox is a type F/W 22 manned by F Company 5th Batt. Home Guard. Handy shelter when the winds get daft. Ive included some downloads from Ordnance Survey showing directions etc. The pathway up to the pillbox is apparently the old Lowca Light Railway. I've lived here all my life and did'nt know that!!

Went and took some more pictures around Harrington today. Theres a part of the sea defences that, if it was a bit bigger, would make for an interesting DS experiment. Theres a few taken up Copperas again, then a few from underneath the hill.

The landowner has OK'd Copeland Model Club to use this site, and has also agreed to us driving right up and parking in the old railway sidings.

Heres a few pictures of the Sea Brows at Maryport. This is handier for anyone in Carlisle who fancies a quick coastal flight. Access to the tops is simple. Just follow the signs for the Roman Museum, or follow Wood St, right on Crosby St, left then immediately right onto Camp Rd, then turn left onto the cliff tops. Follow the road north until arriving at the museum car park. A short walk north past the museum there is a good LZ for bigger models.
