Build Log
scale 12ft jon boat

something I wanted to try. 9 3/4 x 3
it will be rc....still deciding on trolling motor, small outboard,or mud motor surface drive.

either choice of motor will be scratch build.

that's what im thinking too.
hull isn't perfect......thanks to budl...um.......the saints...lol.
seats are wide and out of scale....gotta hide electronics somewhere....
my goal is something that would fit behind a 1/10th rc truck bed.
maybe a scale 10 hp surface drive mud motor on a 10-11 ft hull.

rc surface drive will be a challenge.
may go with a mud buddy style.

starting to figure out the surface drive setup now.
may need a bigger boat for this motor build.
need to build the drive shaft a lil longer, make this unit more compact.

Looks pretty nifty. What did you use to make the frame?

I love the idea igotit,
nice job so far on the unit! I would suggest doing an inboard/outboard disguised as an outboard. it will give you the reliable drive line along with the appearance you want. Have a look here at the drives I am putting in 12'' rc models. They work very well. Instead of just the outdrive, you can fabricate the whole upper portion of an outboard motor on top of the drive. just an idea. I am starting a new project (actually mostly finished just havn't posted it yet) using this I/O design.
Keep us posted, this will look Awesome on top of a 1/10 scale crawler!!!

Cheers

Very nice G-O! That's a pretty neat looking setup, and, in the interests of the thread how well does your silicone tubing universal joint hold up, especially in tight turns? Got to have good maneuverability of course. Considered using a real universal joint?

igotit: I'm not sure you can use G-O's idea in a jon boat unless you hide the motor under one of those bench seats, a larger one or some appropriate "clutter" in the hull; boxes, tackle boxes or other "detritus". I really like your belt-drive surface drive/"outboard" though.
Never seen anyone make a scale jon boat before.

Thanks Harquebus!
I have had that Starcraft for about two years now and still have not changed the silicone coupling, it holds perfect cause there is almost no torque compared to the grip the silicone has on the shafts. I just started another build log for the zodiac.

igotit - The motor would probably fit under one of the seats with the esc, and the battery and rx in another seat. The servo can be disguised as a gerry can? Keep us posted and let us know what your planning! this is a neat little boat, it has great potential, especially on the back of a crawler!

Cheers
