Question
Building techniques

Greetings,

I am building the Krick Borkum (see my build thread) and I am just getting started on the hull assembly. I have some questions to ask the experienced builders:

1. Do you coat - paint/varnish - ALL exposed wood? I am mostly concerned about
the undersides of decks, hidden sides of bulkheads etc.

2. Do you varnish before glue - or after glue?

3. Do you Varnish the Deck Planking before gluing?

4. Do you stain pieces before gluing?

5. Does Titebond work over varnished wood?

6. Does Titebond work over stained wood?

7. Are there any combinations that come to mind that are "deadly"
(like they melt an ABS hull)?

8. My Hull is ABS - it is getting dusty/dirty - what will clean it best, what do I stay away from -
- mineral spirits?
- alcohol?
- naptha?
- lighter fluid?
- acetone?

Titebond works best on bare wood. But if you glue before you stain, the glue will likely interfere with the finish.
Sealing all surfaces of wood isn't likely necessary, but certainly won't do any harm. It's simple, and may prevent serious issues later on.

I would suggest staining everything first, and varnishing after assembly is complete. That's just what I like.

I'd steer away from acetone for cleaning the hull. Alcohol or dish detergent should suffice.

Hi Jim,

Below are what I did in building my Borkum. Hope it helps!

1, I paint all the exposed woods. For the hidden parts I used white acrylic paint instead of clear vanish so I am sure they are all covered.

2, Vanish after glue.

3 and 4, No. I think wood-glue-wood gives the best bonding.

7, Acetone dissolve ABS efficiently! See below my home made "ABS glue" used in 3D printing!

8, I used alcohol to clean the hull, then wet sand it with #400 before painting.

Cheers,
CM Cheng

Thanks,

I am beginning to attach the "decking" or "cladding"

"Patience is a virtue" - plan, dust-off, measure three times, cut only after
you exhale.

Do not forget to sand before you finish - I won't again.

My UHU glue showed up from the UK today - so back to the build thread.
