Down here in Southern Arizona under the auspices of AMA club Southern Arizona Gliders and Electrics we have organised a series of DLG contests. With Dave Rosenthal doing the arranging and CDing and myself the scoring and many others helping in lots of ways.

On behalf of everyone who has flown in those contest, from entry fees and after expenses from many contests, we can send a cheque for $1,000 in support of the 2013 USA F3K Team.

Of course we also hope to get enough in the fund to stimulate Frank Slaughter's contribution that he recently offered.

I will send this off to the AMA care of the 2013 F3K Team unless advised of a better place.

Again this is not a personal contribution but from "you" who flew with us over the past year or so.

Anyone have a set of Swindells or Concept tailfeathers they'd like to sell? Used is fine.

I've been told that most contest planes use only the Hyperion DS09s for their flaperons, and then DS285s for elevator and rudder. Is this still considered a "standard" and what is it about the DS285's that make them advantageous for tail feathers. I'm building my first learner dlg (a TopSky1.1). . I have Hyperions as well as some Ions - the JRs seem a bit pricey though - which is why I am wondering why they are often used.Thanks for any input.

The DS-09's & 285's were digital and fit in their applications and were a good price in bulk for a while, that is why I used them in my three planes. The 285's in the fuse may be a bit of overkill for many applications.

The SM22 for $19.95 is a good substitute for the DS285 at $34.95. I've used bunches of them. Mechanically, the SM22 is almost as sturdy. One difference is the resolution and internal position feedback: If a DS285 will respond to a positional change of a single trim click, then an SM22 will only respond to an increase of 2 or 3 of the same clicks. We're into splitting hairs, and you'll have to decide if it's worth the cost increase. This is more more of an issue on the elevator. For the rudder, holding torque is equally important.

The SM22 at $19.99 plus $3.69 shipping isn't a whole lot less than the DS285 at $29.99 with free shipping. The digitals might be worth the extra $6. But they do use more battery power. I've had good luck with both, but prefer the 285.

Good stuff! I buy servos from amainhobbies with free shipping, but this is the lowest price for DS285s I've seen in a while.

OK guys, question for the scratch builders out there. Anybody in the Phoenix area that has assembled any molds using Poraver as a fill material, and if so, have some leftovers that you might want to part with? I'm working on a fuse mold and had planned to go the Poraver fill route, talked with the manufacturer in Canada and the cost of the Poraver itself is very reasonable.....shipping for a single bag on the other hand is outrageous...about 3 times the cost of the material itself. Was hoping someone else in the area might have done a larger project and had enough left overs that I could purchase some locally.

Alternatively....is anybody else in the area considering doing some molds that might be interested in going in to buy a larger quantity? Shipping is still expensive but considerable less per unit once you get up in the 4-5 bag range.
