Pilot-RC Giant Scale Trainer/Tow Plane Build

I have always been a fan of Pilot-RC planes so when a friend of mine got a new giant scale trainer from Pilot I jumped at the chance to build one.

It came from Chief. http://www.chiefaircraft.com/radio-c...tt3d30-01.html

We will be using a DLE 35RA engine, Savox 0251 servos, Spektrum Rx, and A123 batteries for the Rx. It will be setup as tail dragger.

Everything was packed in the box securely. No shipping damage. The hardware looks nice and there seems to be all the linkages and parts needed, even a spinner.

First thing I notice is this fuse is different than in the company pictures. It has a "cowl" built out on the front to enclose the engine. It is just an extension of the fuse sides but I think it will look good. I just set the DLE 35 in it to see if it would fit and I think it will, barely.

This fuse is sweet. Nice finish with no wrinkles. The fuel tank and lines are already installed along with the servo extensions for the rudder and elevator. They even give you a nice fuel dot.

I started with mounting the motor since it will require the most planning. The firewall is marked for a DLE 30. Looking at the 35 I noticed the mounting is slightly different. The 30 mounting holes are 70mm wide. On the 35 what I will call the "bottom" 2 are 70mm wide but the "top" holes are 80mm wide.

The 35 is rear exhast. You can see it requires a completely flat surface to mount to for the muffler to clear. The bottom of the fuse has some triangle stock sticking out so I cut and sanded them off flush.

It has a servo mount cut out in the front for the throttle, and it appears to be in a workable spot for the 35's throttle linkage placement. There is also a small platform in front of that I plan to put the ignition module on. I don't see any hole large enough to get the spark plug cap thru so i will use one of the lightening holes in the fuse bottom. It will have to be enlarged slightly to get the cap thru.

Do you need a drill template for that motor?

I drilled the bottom holes marked "DLE 30", filed one slightly to get the muffler to center up in the opening and then did a guesstimation of the top two holes. I had to grind some of the triangle stock away at the black oval on the picture. The red holes are approximately where I drilled.

Hey Proto, do you mean for the firewall mounting or the prop drilling? I do have a prop jig for it.

No it did not come with one. It would be nice to have one for the next plane to use a 35.

I got it mounted as you can see there is very little clearance but it does fit! The cutout is for the plug wire to come thru.

Very interesting fit! Do you think there will be heat issues with the airframe?

I don't think so. I've had other planes with mufflers close to wood and it was not a problem. In the air it gets plenty of cooling. If you ran it on the ground not moving for a long time it could heat up but the prop blast still provides a lot of cooling.
