1. High winds (15 mph plus) will cause the stock sliders to slip. See attached drawings for the fixes we implemented. An alternate fix for the Tube fix is replace the stock o-rings with Danco #31 o-rings (available at Lowes in plumbing dept.) The o-ring fix will work in 20 mph plus winds without slipping.

The dimensions on the sketches are necessary if slippage occurs. They are from the earlier Nirvana series which had fixed dimensions with the exception of the sheets. The boat will sail OK and you can fine tune from them.

2. Line preference is Berkley Gorilla line, 50#. The 35# line diameter is too small and will slip under the roller sheave on the servo arm. The smaller diameter also has a tendency to slip through in the bowsies in high winds.
Note: The Gorilla line is 20 yr old technology. New 50# line is the dia of a hair. New line technology has 150# line at the old 50# dia.

3. Sail servo arm mods: Pre Nirvana III servos had a lot of problems (well documented in this thread). The new servo appears to have over come those faults. However, my replacement servo choice is the Hi Tech 645MG which falls in the Nirvana torque specs. This servo will flex the arm and the mounting deck under load. There are stronger servos available but I suspect deck or arm damage will occur over time.

The stock servo spline has a larger od than the 645. The stock servo arm spline id is larger than the spline adapter on the 645. This id /od tolerance mismatch can cause the stock arm to slip when used on the 645. The quick fix is to epoxy the two pieces together and use the screws to stop separation caused by flex.

I use Scotch tape to keep the lines from becoming tangled with the arm. Simple but effective.

Hope this helps,
gvank
Effective 04-09-2015 at our next club meeting the tube retainers referenced above will be replaced with the following tuning tip sheet.
The referenced O-rings will work as well as or better than the tube retainers. The O-rings are lighter and have less drag.

DLC,
You are welcome. At our next club meeting, 04-09-2015, I will present the following information regarding the boom slider retainers. After sailing for the past three months in some real bad conditions, I've had no slippage with the o-rings.

Smooth sailing to you,
gvank

Gvank - any chance you could post the Nivana III Boom mods as a PDF (like your other items)?

As I don't know how to convert on my own ;-) . . . and would like to use your drawing as a reference.

Thanks,

This should cover your request. The O-ring change will sail the boat to it's limits without slippage.

Chi,

That sounds very close to what Marvin the Martian wanted to use to blow up the earth!
