Aircraft museum project - "Tribute"

Hi, - - This might be of interest to "scale" guys into nose art and the Airforce. Please direct them here. I need all the help I can get.

Dave here. I am an ex VARMS member and been out of modelling for a while. I ran the annual scale comp for nearly a decade.

I am assisting my Nephew Jim who is a graphic artist in a light hearted project but I need some assistance on airport vehicle livery, historic aviation companies and Airforce insignias and logos.

Scope.

To decorate a 1989 Volvo wagon to make it look like it just drove out of an Aircraft Museum's hanger after servicing the airside of an airport.
This is a "tribute" project. The car and museum have never existed so I am open to style options. Accuracy of artwork and appropriateness to squadrons in reference to nose art etc is not critical so USA RAF and other influences can be mixed and matched as can decades and styles.

Methods

I have a mate who can print onto Vinyl and I have access to a vinyl cutter so the artwork will be stuck onto the car.

The car.

I got it quite a bit cheaper than that and have spent a few thousand getting it safe.

Over the next few days I will post inspiration and some of the stuff I have discovered and where I would like to see the concept go. I will also like to get some inspiration for you lot.

What an airside vehicle looks like.

They vary from airport to airport.

Some of the artwork we have tried. We have mucked around with the vinyl cutter and this is a failed attempt at the scaling.

Ideally we will have a dominate "Sharks Teeth" down the side of the car.

The rear side window will have aviation stickers on them.

Some ideas.

More soon.

What do you mean you spent thousands getting it safe? I thought a volvo was incapable of going "unsafe"

Interested to see where this ends up

There can be no other colour scheme for an airside vehicle. Ex RAAF too.

A common theme globally is either a full yellow roof or a yellow band on the roof.

Silver as a base colour is ok

I was thinking of a "FOLLOW ME" across the back window. This will be in the sticker material that has a heap of small holes in it like on the side of a bus.

What I need right now is a heap of links to appropriate aviation logos. I hope to print them out and stick them on the rear side windows.

I also want "NO STEP" type images

There must be more aircraft stickers that say a maintenance crew would stick in the airport runabout? Suggestions welcome.

As you can see I am crap with paint. This is a screen shot from the vinyl software and squeezed into paint to add the reflective stripe.

We also need some inspiration on the bonnet.

Nose art of some kind will be required. This too will be either a vinyl print or an airbrushed number. I guess it needs to stand out and in some way make sense. I would prefer to keep away from female images as these are frowned upon in the forces these days.

I was thinking of the Phantom "bust" with some caption. It has to be tough.

Simple,

Nephew is a graphic artist. I love cars. I said we should do a project car.

Originally we were going to put sharks teeth on the side but it makes no sense. We brain stormed the idea and said, where would you see a car with sharks teeth? We put two and two together and realised if you had a car at an airport museum or attached to a squadron, the keepers of that car might decorate it as a tribute to get colour schemes found on planes.

This is a famous car

But we liked the simplicity of this.

We wanted to go a different way, to make a car look like the artwork belonged, almost as if the car had a history.

So what I need is to give it the dynamic of detail but the simplicity of stickers I need iconic company logos and suppliers of part / services and say stickers from far away flying clubs. This is where I need links to images and I hope you folk can help me here. I don't know what is reliant to aviation.

So please post images of aviation icons in this thread.

I will turn these into stickers and put them on the car.

Hi
Google is the way to go there are thousands of sites with artwork, squad badges, old pinup art ect ect....Just bare in mind that a lot of the squad logo's,mascots artwork MAY have copyright limitations and restrictions...I know from personal experience that you have to be careful to respect the history of the artwork.......(an Ovlov might be pushing the boundaries ) that said there is no reason you cant use artistic license

I guess I have no idea what to look for. I confuse model clubs and real flying clubs etc. There is BP fuel and BP avgas. etc

I was hoping to get as close to believable as possible. If that makes sense?

Quick and dirty search goto google.com and type in
pinup art.Down the left side of your browser or across the top (depending on browser used) you should see the word "Images" click on that, google picks the images from pages all over the net that best suits your search query

you could also try squadron logos or even nose art in the search box
