Is it? I would say the Supra is a far more advanced design. Not only in materials used but in the airfoils and plan form. It will out perform the GL any day of the week.

Is it possible that more started out flying GL's glider's than any other design, And I know there were other design's at the time. Would someone like to start a poll?

When it was first introduced, it could be biult for $10 or so, flew like a cloud, and was infitely repairable. It was big enough to hold the mamoth servo's we had then. If I remember right, the G-L came out in the late 60's or early 70's, and wasn't the "best" glider even then, just really good as a trainer/relaxed flier-it still is.

Let's define best. Is it:

• Most popular ?
• Easiest to build?
• Won the most contests?
• Most fun to fly?

Best simply isn't precise enough. Besides, it's common knowledge that Dodgson designs were really the best (looking and performing)

Marketing?

For years, almost every pilot started with a GL. Later, when they were flying super ships, they went back to their first love and for something that was relaxing, repairable, could be used to teach other beginners and was cheap.

While I wouldn't claim that the Oly 2 is the best glider ever designed, I will claim that it's a better trainer than the GL. And, yeah, I've beaten those hi tech RES gliders in contests using mine. Doesn't even have spoilers. And it's something lie 30 years old too. One of the competitors complained that he was distracted by the noise from the buzzing Monokote. (It hasn't had the maintenance it deserves.)

Better hang time, better visibility, and even handles a little better than the GL.

I always loved my old Oly II. I got it 2nd or even 3rd hand. Orange and black Monocote. We called it the Great Pumpkin. But man oh man, it would fly forever! It has since been re-furbed and lives with my old flying buddy out in California. Rumor has it that he doesn't fly it anymore though.

I agree is a great trainer, my firt RC plane to, but I fell in love with his sexy younger sister, Sopthiticated Lady, which flew for more than 12 years and was the trainer plane of at least three of my budies.

THe best I dont know but certanly should make the Hall of Fame of RC gliders

Before I got into this hobby, I knew 2 people at work who flew GL. They said they were the best ever. That was back in the 80's. It seem's that everyone who has ever had one, loved it.
