My feeling is that changes are you are suggesting are not worth to be done on a 90$ model. And not just for economical reason: the risk of failing anyway would be high, according to my own rating. If you have money to invest, buy a reliable 1/10 nitro model. If not, the in try second hand.. If neither this fits your budget... try going brushless or changing hobby :-)
P.S. I don't fully understand your bearing solution. What is faulty in the original pullstarter is either one way bearing or mechanical tolerance of the pin that goes inside the bearing (or both...).

I agree with Tom that buying a new engine is not the answer. The new engine is likely to have the same pull start issues. The only sure fire solution is to buy a starter box and cut a slot in the chassis for bump starting. There are starter boxes for around $30 -$40. Picco engines have the OWB outside of the crankcase, but they are too expensive for this little buggy. That's the real problem, the internal OWB is getting lubricated by the fuel mixture.

I am going to try the bearings on the starter shaft soon since it is an inexpensive method. I may get time to do it this weekend.

**Tried it...it didn't work...

oh i didn't realise this went on to a 3rd page.. yes i'll most likely go with the 1/10 toxic nitro, would really loved to have gotten a 1/16 nitro but looks like i dont have a choice.

btw i already have a couple of brushless, i just want to try nitro for the fun of it
