Sopwith Pup - Scale but 3D capable

Ive been having a lot of fun with a scale Sopwith Pup I designed sometime ago. Its 32" span and weighs just under 11oz made from 6mm Depron. Ive installed a UH hacker Style Brushless Outrunner 20-28M which is simailr to an Axi 2208/34 and this provides almost too much power from an 850mah 3 cell and a 9X4.7.

It amuses me to cruise about in the local park at scale speed looking like the original, but then surprising a few folk by opening the throttle to do most tricks in the book. I originally thought it would be very close coupled, but it can be sensibly balanced with the gear as far forward as possible. I will probably move the tail surface servos into the fusalage as they look a bit odd with external CF pushrods.

I flew it last night in 15 knots and it behaved well, and despite having a pair of 4% @ 40% undercambered wings flies inverted with just a touch of down trim.

Aileron response is good and maintaining my Fidgit3D standards the loops are tight. The elevator is a bit bigger than scale and I think scale would probably work fine.

I have CAD plans if anyone is interested, the prototype should really be silver, but i couldnt wait so added the decals and left it depron coloured !

If the wind ever dies down I will get my 10yr old to grab some video.

I cheated a bit on the rudder as well as the elevator, I extended its area as well, in fact I almost think a scale one would work ok. Scale and bigger areas are both shown on the plan. I am just altering my original plan to show the motor mounted slightly differently so that the LiPo can be a little further forward to help the CG then Ill post them.

These were the 2 original photos of teh Pup that inspired me to design this one, I think this plane looks great although I gather that it wasnt one of teh best.

Richard,

Thanks for the plans and the build guide - you have done a fine job ! I love WW1 bipes. The real Pup was supposed to be a real pleasure to fly - it looks as though you have replicated that.

Thanks again,

Nigel

p.s. Love the way you have done the cabine struts - never thought of that !!!!

This is a nice plane. On of my favorites, though, is the Camel. You did good work on this one.

More thoughts after further flight testing

Funnily enough I debated Camel or Pup when I started the design. Ive seen loads of Camels but few Pup plans so that swayed my decision. I have a Camel plan started so it could get completed.....

Went out tonight with very little wind - 1st time flying in a gentle breeze. The video battery was dead - typical just when you need someting to work .....

The Pup cruises about rather majestically at very low throttle settings, climbs like a demon with the Axi 2208/34, harriers ok, rolls and flies inverted. It does loops as tight as you dare, and will even do an outside loop. KF requires a bit of power - rudder co-ordination, and even with the rearmost cg I havent managed a blender yet, but Im about to increase elevator and aileron movement ....

I didnt set out to make a top of the range 3D machine but it does ok for a very near scale beast.

Try to keep the weight as far forward as you can.
